Wrist Check

Well look what the mail brought on midweek, a watch brand I would normally never buy. FOSSIL! (no disrespect to Fossil quartz, just not my taste:)
This is not the usual low cost quartz, it's the FSW1004, the Swiss made automatic that has the STP1-11 movement under the hood. Fossil now owns all components necessary to make totally inhouse Swiss watches.
Since ETA (Swatch) is cutting many brands off to their movements, Fossil, among others, are scrambling to fill the void for access to quality Swiss movements. By all accounts the STP1-11 is a stellar 26 jewel auto that is an improvement over the venerable 2824.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the watch industry with the Japanese hot on the heels of the Swiss, not to mention the Giant Chinese watch industry.
This watch is a modest 38mm and a simple yet classic design that should go well with most dress/occasions. It has a bubble sapphire crystal and slightly curved hands which plays with the light. I can't even feel it on the wrist compared to those giant Android divers but that has it's charm too.
Out of the box it's running at +7 to 9 spd. These movements typically run at 0-4 spd. I'll see how it settles down. Happy Wednesday all... (-;

Wow, I have to say that's a real looker. I generally ignore Fossil because of their low cost quartz, but that's a real attention grabber. The 38mm is a great size for that design. Nice addition to your collection!

PetrosDThanks Petros! It's growing on me. I also generally ignored Fossil until I read up on their brilliant move to position themselves into the higher quality Swiss auto movement business. It remains to be seen if they will focus on supplying STP movements to third parties or expand their own line with these very fine movements. The 38mm is a bit on the small side but the dial is so clear and open that it's not a deal breaker. Even these aging eyes can quickly see what time it is...(-;

Cameron Weiss of Weiss Watch Company in Los Angeles has founded another companay, Pinion Precision Technology, with the goal of supplying movements to companies cut off by ETA. So far he's cloned the ETA 6497 (a chunky hand winder, originally used in pocket watches, but now used in wrist watches), with only the mainspring still coming from Switzerland. I don't know how successful his project will be, but it would certainly be freaky if a watch movement manufacturing industry developed in the United States.
Love The Smoking Tire.
