There Are Pandas, and Then There Are Pandas.
And this isn't either of them! The Pandas we're talking about here, are watches, not bears. And what got me thinking about them (again) was a link posted this morning by @cm.rook who pointed a few of us to the very attractive (and not terribly priced) Yema "Rallygraph" Panda which, in it's most traditional arrangement, looks like the one on the left, but can also be had in the version on the right: The model on the left is a true Panda, while the model on the right is called a reverse Panda. The reason for that distinction is clear--Panda bears, only come in the first arrangement. Now at this point, everyone should be thinking about the most well-know Panda, The Rolex Panda, which is actually a Daytona, and among Rolex Daytonas, the most famous of which is the Paul Newman Daytona, which was famous first, because it was Paul's, and second because it sold at auction for $17.8 million (US Dollars). This is not the usual low cost quartz, it's the FSW1004, the Swiss made automatic that has the STP1-11 movement under the hood. Fossil now owns all components necessary to make totally inhouse Swiss watches.
Since ETA (Swatch) is cutting many brands off to their movements, Fossil, among others, are scrambling to fill the void for access to quality Swiss movements. By all accounts the STP1-11 is a stellar 26 jewel auto that is an improvement over the venerable 2824.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the watch industry with the Japanese hot on the heels of the Swiss, not to mention the Giant Chinese watch industry.
This watch is a modest 38mm and a simple yet classic design that should go well with most dress/occasions. It has a bubble sapphire crystal and slightly curved hands which plays with the light. I can't even feel it on the wrist compared to those giant Android divers but that has it's charm too.
Out of the box it's running at +7 to 9 spd. These movements typically run at 0-4 spd. I'll see how it settles down. Happy Wednesday all... (-;
