Wrist Check

Enjoying a crisp Texas Sunday with my latest Parnis. The Marina Militaire. It's a hefty size at 44mm, made from a machined block of 316L SS and runs on a Sea Gull 6497 mvmnt. It's running within 8-10 seconds per day. Amazing quality for a watch well below $100.

I read an article regarding the 6497 movt in these parnis. They are not oiled and no lube, they tend to wear down in couple years and is a headache to disassemble and put back because the parts mearly fit.
Nonetheless, good value as a beater but not so good when it comes to maintenance and repair.

fallenmigYes, indeed, the 6497s are not lubricated from the factory. To me that is no big deal at all. The "two tier" production of Parnis, "supposedly" as some write here is marketing/sales blog nonsense. As an owner of 6 Parnis watches with three different movements I can attest that they all are 316L machined SS and have the decorated color-coded high quality Sea Gull mvmnts. The difference with the higher priced dealers is two things, classier packaging and sapphire crystals. Mine are all hard mineral as that is sufficient for me, but, always, the seller has the sapphire option for $25 additional. The supposed "2-3 years" of lifespan is nonsense. The 6497 is a very rugged original pocket watch movement that can function well for decades without lubrication. Sea Gull has perfected this mvmnt and makes millions of them. If you want, lubricate them! What's the big deal? Parnis watches are the best bargain available and the idea of two tier, "copy of a copy" production is not correct and makes no sense. When you hold one of them, wind it, and wear it you will feel the incredible quality for money. The above mentioned PAM homage was $50 plus $6 shipping. No sapphire as I didn't order it. Came without fancy box, tags, etc. Runs within 8 seconds per day. I will not lubricate it to see what happens. I have lubricated two others with 6497s for comparison. No can of worms at all, just simply amazing bargains for watches that the west would charge $300-500 for.

The one quibble I have with Parnis is that all their watches have the small seconds complication. It's a pet peeve of mine, but I really prefer center seconds. Besides that the Parnis watch faces are really clean looking.

You guys might want to search this forum for our previous discussion of Parnis, which was pretty thorough, comparing all this speculation on other forums (there's a lot more than you found), along with some more reliable journalistic articles. But like I said, I don't want to spend any more time on it.

CloacaThanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely check out your past discussions. Though I'm not interested in the watches themselves, the idea of a group of faceless brands at least somewhat united under a common name is intriguing. I look forward to learning more.
