Wrist Check

Laying in bed with a sore throat today, but enjoying this bold, Zodiac Jetomatic. I fell in love with it when I saw it in a watch shop on Melrose Blvd, but didn’t have the guts to get it at the retail price. My wife got wind of it and ended up getting it for me off of Amazon for Christmas. It’s a big, beefy pilot with a screw-down onion crown and huge, scalloped lugs. Here I put it on a safety-orange, nylon Zulu that I picked up from NATO Strap Co, matches perfectly and brightens up my sicky-face day.

How is Melrose Avenue doing these days? As a native Angeleno I was there during the creation when punk fashion stores started to spring up, taking out $50 full-page ads in the original Stuff Magazine:

I remember a lot of those covers!
I was gone by the time Melrose really started to boom, but I've been reading online for about a decade that it's been in decline, reverting to its sleazy origins.

I really like that. Only one left in stock at Amazon, hmmm.
Most of the Zodiacs at Amazon are not on the Zodiac website as current models, but are mostly cooler looking, and beefier, than the current models. I wonder what that means.

CloacaFrom what I understand, this model is probably one of the last of what has been termed an Invicta-esque period in Zodiac’s horology. They are going forward with a more classic style that you could say is riding the wave of current fashion, where smaller, more subdued/traditional cases are steadily growing in popularity. Thus, not on the website, because it represents their middle-period brand. All that said, it is large, yes, but I love all the ribbing and polish swirls, the bold, raised indices, the smoked, transparent date wheel that lets you see all the rest of the days in the months. It’s a curious piece that if nothing else I feel is one of the best-executed & most-restrained examples of the ‘big watch’ phenomena.
