EarStudio ES100 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078H4YD2L/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This little thing is and has been my favorite. I use it now more frequently than any of the five other DAC's I own.

Tsanguinefor how long have you had it? What about build quality? Is it stiff without any creaking/crunching sound?))

guruaudio001I purchased it September from Amazon and pair it with an inexpensive balanced cable from Lunashops. http://www.lunashops.com/goods.php?id=6192 It has had two firmware updates since I've purchased and the developers work with the community and are continuing to update and add new functionality. Nothing special about build quality. It's a plastic 2'x1' box holding a chip and a battery with a clip. You wouldn't want it made out of anything but plastic so as not to inhibit the bluetooth. It is functional though I would prefer a different button layout and to have the small buttons slightly raised. It is overall very utilitarian. The nice thing about the plastic and it's small lightweight size is that I don't worry about dropping it or throwing it in a bag. Kind of reminds me of my Sandisk Sansa Clip+ from years ago. Those things could survive a hurricane. It's stiff enough. I could fairly easily crack it open if I wanted too but I'm not sure why you would care. Again... it's a 2'x1' shell of plastic that delivers balanced sound with EQ that nothing in it's price range can remotely touch in my experience. I prefer it to my Centrance Dacport HD, SMSL Idea DAC, and even my Sony UDA1, I've been tempted to order a second one just to have an extra in case mine breaks.

guruaudio001I have not been able to hear any hiss and I listen at 105db typically. I have not used it as a USB/DAC at this point. Have exclusively used it with bluetooth and LDAC codec. What's funny is I hate bluetooth but this thing has me converted on what is possible. Bluetooth may still be flakey occasionally and I need to disable bluetooth and reconnect but that's it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

TsanguineAt 105 db hearing damage begins after 30 minutes... at 85db most people can take up to 8 hours before hearing damage sets in. I can't say I would recommend listening at 105dbs.

ElectronicVicesToo clarify. I tend to listen at reference level that can peak at 105db. Just had my hearing checked last summer and it was perfect.

TsanguineAh, makes sense, 85db baseline with 20db of headroom for peaks. In the same ballpark myself although I do try to tone it down these days. A few too many concerts in my early youth and hearing damage is cumulative.

TsanguineOne of the cool but small features of using the app is that once you put in the specs of your headphones, IEM's, etc. it will show you a DB value associated with your volume level. So I don't have to guess how loud it is. Small but kinda handy.

GriffeyjnrI think so but I would need to double check. I've never used it in this way and don't own any apple products.

Griffeyjnrwill try to find a colleague with the proper lightning adapter to test this out (my work mobile is an iPhone.) For personal use I'm all Android, iOS has some pretty limited BT codecs and the lack of expandable memory is a dealbreaker for my purposes.

GriffeyjnrYes, you can use an ES100 with an Apple Camera Connection Kit (sometimes shortened to CCK, I have the USB 3 model that also has another lightning port for charging your phone) connected to an iPhone. If you get the smaller USB 2 CCK, it shouldn’t be too awkward on the go since the ES100 is pretty small and light too. I don’t know if you can still use the EarStudio app when connected with USB though, haven’t tested that. However, Bluetooth codecs sound so good these days you might have a hard time hearing the difference with an Apple Music or Spotify stream. If you have a junk USB cable (like the one that came with my printer, which still works fine for that purpose), the wired connection might actually sound WORSE than just using Bluetooth!
