What a beauty, but why so big!? Anyone know of any alternatives in the 38/40mm range?

AlexMorelloThis watch is loosely modeled on WWII era German Pilots watches referred to as a Flieger "B" type watch. (There is also an "A" type with a different face) These watches were very large for visibility under challenging conditions. So finding smaller ones is not as common, though I agree it is too big. There is a great watch forum with a silly name (Watch U Seek) which is a goldmine of information on other brands of Flieger type watches.

AlexMorelloApart from Laco for other sizes as someone else mentioned, check out Archimede, they also have 39mm fliegers, but a bit more expensive than Steinharts but comparable or better fit and finish.

Irish1776Hi have a Laco Munster and it's pretty great...wanted a B-Dial, but got the A because it's all that was in stock at LIW at the time. Not sure if Laco calibrates the movements before they ship, but it's the most accurate of all my automatics. It's + 3secs/24h. The lume is incredible. There's a three foot orb of green light around my wrist when the lights are out. It fades a little through the night, but it's still surprisingly strong in the AM. A note to people not familiar with Flieger watches: they, particularly the ones with thin margins between the crystal and case, tend to look larger on the wrist because there's no bezel. The Munster is 42mm (IIRC) but appears larger than my 43mm divers. Being a downsized replica of a WWII watch, the lugs are totally straight, which makes it wear even bigger, and if we're sharing secrets, makes it just a touch too long lug to lug for my 6.75" wrist. If the lugs were curved, it would be perfect. And yes, in WWII, they were huge; looked like hockey pucks on the wrist.
