Non Hand-Winding Movement Vs Hand-Winding Movement

more_vert
I recently purchased a Seiko Fifty Five Fathoms watch (I'm still waiting for it to arrive) and realized that the Seiko 7S36 movement is non hand-winding. All of my other automatics have the hand-winding feature. Does this mean you just have to give it a good shake every time you wear it and let it power itself on your wrist? Is this a big downside?

I have two non hand winding watches and I just shuffle them a bit to get the watch ticking. If I know from the night before that I will wear one of those watches the next day, I'll just put it in my watch winder overnight and then set the time in the morning.
That being said, I won't buy any more non hand winding watches. I prefer winding them to get them going.

I always have preferred to hold the watch head in hand and make a swirling motion to wind. I believe some people literally shake back-forth, but I think that is way harder on the balance.
Personally, I have no interest in getting any more of these older Seiko movements. I prefer being able to handwind.
More or less, yes - you have to give it a couple shakes or spin it around on the bracelet a couple times to get it going. I find that if you get it out, give it a couple shakes and set the time it is usually up and running.
I don't find it a big downside. It (along with its brother the 7s26) resides in many of the SNZG, SKX and Seiko 5 watches. While I would certainly prefer a movement with hand winding capability it has been a non issue for me, and like you, most of my watches utilize hand winding movements.
