My adventures into audiophilia also started as a musician, doing little gigs with a shitty PA and eventually taking turns at the mixing board at live events and recording demos. Being able to EQ an instrument to actually hear it through a mix was revelatory. Developing the ear for a mix helped me understand when the listening apparatus was the limitation.
One ah-ha moment I can remember is when I first got my IEMs seated properly and the sound transformed completely. I'd eventually get custom ear molds made (back in 2005) to maintain that sound as much as possible while moving around on stage.
