But let's backtrack a second, my first "ah ha" moment had nothing to do with headphones or hifi gear. It all stems from this one concert I attended at the local symphony. The orchestra was doing a Broadway music concert and had brought in some big name singers with pedigrees from Phantom of the Opera, The Little Mermaid, Man of Lamancha, etc. Each did their signature pieces, but the song that absolutely captivated me was the simple "Moon River". First each did a solo passage, then a couple duets within it, but near the end there was this one line, the titular line of "Moon River.... wider than a mile". All three sang in unison, no harmony, just octaves apart. There was this supreme clarity to the sound that the entire audience froze when the singers stopped for a breath between words. It was a singular moment of musical perfection.
*That* was the "ah ha" moment. I've been chasing after it ever since.
