Light, modular, and airline compliant for carry on. Ideally, a 40+L backpack that fits in the overhead after removing the modular attached top or bottom pack and slinging it on your shoulder as the “personal item” with the one carry on item as the main pack. I have been searching the outdoor outlets for something that fits that description for less than high three figures. Waterproof would be nice, so I could strap it on the back of my motorbike for a weekend trip. Most Norte Americano airlines have a 22 x14 x 9” standard for carry on. So the main pack would have to be squishable into that. My $.02. edit: CactusPete and VerdeDragon we think alike. I’ve been looking at the Mountainsmith models on REI outlet but have not found one that fits all criteria.

KermudjinExactly what I have in mind. Why is it so hard to find a pack like that?

cewinI am getting back in to backpacking and camping with my college age kids as I enter my 7th decade. Paying college tuitions leaves me looking for bargains for gear. Massdrop has been great for helping me assemble modern gear at a good price. I still have an external frame backpack and down bag from the 70’s and am constantly amazed at how the technology has advanced.

KermudjinMountainsmith is coming out with all new packs this year. Available, I believe, after the 7th. My current favorite day pack is an old MS Cairn 18L hip pack. My daily commuter pack is a Day.
