Shoes are personal preference items, like bicycle saddles, and fit isn't easy to predict. Some shoes will fit some people, and vice versa. For instance, I fit into Salomon and Inov well, Merrell okay, Nike poorly, Keen and 5-10 not at all. Vibram 5-Fingers looked interesting, but I needed different sizes for each foot, and wasn't prepared to buy two pairs.
Then there's usage, which again varies drastically.
Personally, I'd only trust Salomon (or Shimano) fit and sizing enough to buy online; they seem to be consistent between models. FWIW, I've had really good success with Salomon's XA Pro & X Ultra, in both shoes in mids, GoreTex preferred, for everyday use, hiking/trekking, mountain biking, etc. I'd probably buy a variety of Salomon stuff if the price (including shipping!) was right, including walking/running/climbing shoes and boots, XC/AT ski boots, etc. And Salomon clothing too.
