I've recently went through the process of removing the attached cables on my Sony MDR-V6/7506 headphones and replacing them with female audio jack. Once I got the hang of what to solder, the process was fairly straight forward. I needed to use a Dremel tool to widen the hole for the audio jack. I got some minor scratching around the area but I think it came out looking pretty good.
In addition to being able to use any audio aux cable to attach the headphones, I found that a Bluetooth transceiver works just as well. Once synced up to my phone, the transceiver effectively makes the headphones wireless. The transceiver even has a microphone so I can answer calls on my phone.
I was wondering if anyone else out there has worked on a similar type project. I'd be curious to know what headphones you detached the cable from and how much effort was involved. I'd be interested in hearing both successes and failures alike.
The next pair of headphones I plan on attempting this type of project with are the Beyerdynamic DT770. I'm a huge fan of these cans but the cable can be a bit of a pain. I'd love to hear from anyone who has removed the cable from a pair of DT770s
