Opinions and recommendations on the following Kickstarter

more_vert
HI Team

i am a blades newbie and would like some of your opinions and recommendations on the following kickstarter
http://kck.st/2KCF8OM
I have a friend who is a keen outdoors man and would like to get him something unique or different ( he has quite a collection like TOPs etc blades ) and saw this kickstarter but of course, have no clue on how viable the design is or the steel they are using. Currently they are using 9Cr18Mov steel but have plans for VG-10. Which is all gibberish to me as i am unclear what these types of steel are.
Any opinions or suggestions welcome. Thank you.

Well, if I was looking to invest, this might be the right product...layers and layers of marketing mumbo-jumbo, plenty of tactical hocus-pocus! They even manged to squeeze in KUNG FU! I'm not even kidding!
So yeah, the mall cop market will totally fall for this. It'll sell like paracord. Paracord with a freakin' Pyro fuse inside.
Ignoring the foregone conclusion that every single butane lighter is certain to vaporize at the exact moment the zombies wake, it's still a monumentally stupid idea to have a flint striker at the POMMEL! As an aside, every time a lighter turns up missing, I totally lose my mind...
That shape is borderline ridiculous, while also managing to somehow eliminate any point or way to pierce...fail for a tool sold for hunting, gutting, skinning... Double fail for invoking "survival". Not sure if they mentioned it (I'm NOT reading all that) but the designer clearly stole the idea of extra cinch holes to strap the blade to a stick to make a spear...yet, there's no pointy end?
That proprietary hook is great for selling accessories, useless to the tool owner/operator. It does seem risky to put a 1/4" driver on the opposite end of a sharpened blade, so there's your risk.
I don't think think this will impress a genuine keen outdoorsman. I say buy him a genuine Bic lighter, a box of snap-blade replacements, and big bottle of his (yours) favorite whiskey. He can accomplish more, and giggle doing it.

Hi, may be I can Help, I will try to make this as simple as possible, but basically the type of steel, like the mechanism are important but depends mostly on what is the intente use of the knife. Both of the steels you mentioned are very corrosion resistant, so if I can choose, I will say VG10, better edge retention, and rust and corrosion resistance and likely more forgiving for outdoor use.
Regarding to the shape of the blade, normally I will say apply Kiss principle (Keep It Stupidly Simple), so stay a way from weird shapes because normally they are not practical to use or maintain (some time the weird shapes make very difficult repair or put an edge)
and lastly, a good consideration is be sure that had full tang, means the blade and the handle is made on one piece.
Saying that, I will advice to go to the skeletoniced version of the knife with the normal shape blade, in that way you will be sure is made for last, practical and your friend could personalize the handle in any way he want.
Hope that help.
