I have to concur. It's hard to argue for Canon or Nikon when Sony is making cameras with such great sensors. On the other end of things, the micro 4/3rds cameras have gotten really really good lately. As have the options for lenses. There are all kinds of things from Mitakon, Samyang etc as well as old lenses that can be adapted (with some care to get the focal plane right).
If you are not doing wedding photography or video production where people expect to see a DSLR or kitted out mirrorless Sony. You would probably do well to check out the m43 section on dpreview and the corresponding category on bhphoto. I know if I was starting over I'd dump my DSLR and lenses for a mirrorless m43 and some of the really cool glass they have or those compact cameras. I'm particularly impressed with the Olympus and Fujifilm stuff.

Welcome to the Bigs--Nikon D750 or D850 Can't go wrong either way.

Whoa, talk about swimming against the current. Did you nearly get trampled by the mob running into the Sony camp?
Of course that was a joke. But if you read the photography review blogs and magazines it may be what any reasonable person might conclude. But lets start off with what you are budgeting, your expectations for the new camera, and consider the lens situation. Things are getting a bit cloudy on Nikon's end because they are announcing a new full-frame mirrorless body. And that new body is supposed to have a new lens mount. It may mean that the F-mount is reaching it's twilight. Very hard to predict and the sales of the new system will be a deciding factor. The Nikon One mirrorless system fell on it's face years ago, that may get buyers nervous.
So are you looking at an actual DSLR? Full frame or APS-C sensor? Starter lenses, maybe an eye to pro-level lenses later? What style of photography? Portraits, street photography, landscapes, wildlife, or macro? All of the above?

Maybe. But he said he is moving from Canon to Nikon so I presume he would have some of those answers.
