Combo Blades - Observations and Opinions

more_vert
So I recently gave a Bear Ops Bold Action VI some pocket time and a couple things about its design immediately became clear. Namely the combo blade is visually attractive but really gives me too little fine edge and too much serration. While serrations have their place, I continue to find them impractical for EDC. I think the single veff serration on the CRKT Septimo is really all I need. So what do you guys think: to combo or not to combo?

I like combo for my work knife. I am often having to cut zip ties, boat line etc. and serrated stays sharper longer for any heavy duty cutting. It tends to bite into whatever you are cutting with less effort. I tested my knife on some old crusty rope that needed to be removed and the plain edge would only cut so deep where a sawing motion was required and not very effective. I then tried the serrated portion and it cut through with ease. I also like having the utility of a fine point (most serrated knives arent good for Piercing). I don’t do much carving or shaving where a full plain edge would be better. Here is what I use formy

Never combo, I find it is the worst of both worlds. Either full serration or no serration imo, unless you are willing to carry a really long combo serrated knife. Also gives you an excuse to carry 2 knives instead of 1.
Combo edges have huge issues both design-wise and in-use. -Serrations are always chisel ground, but the plain edge may not be, which makes the entire edge not symmetrical. Combo edges always need to be completely chisel ground, which is something a lot of companies get wrong (and ironically cheap mutitools get right, since they were lazy) -Never enough plain edge to do plain cuts. Serrations always seem to interfere and make a bunch of tiny extra nicks everywhere -Never enough serrations to do serrated cuts. High chance of overexertion when very thick and fibrous material reaches the plain edge and the material and the knife slips off (a little dangerous if people are around)
