A 4 piece 3 weight fly rod, and small belt bag with reel, flies, tippet, nippers and hemostat. Nothing beats catching trout in the mountains. Thru-fished the JMT in 2017 and it was absolutely worth the weight. Mostly catch and release, but occasionally I'd put together a stringer of small fish for the crew. Nothing beats fresh protein between resupplies!

nswenson86How do you stash it in your pack? I've always wanted to carry my rod along but it seemed more of an issue of keeping it protected than adding the extra weight.

nswenson86I've gone to Tenkara. Very compact and simple, fine for smaller streams. I haven't used it yet but looking forward to this summer!

cameron.lensingI have a cylindrical rod case (came with the rod from Norris) for forips when I'm not as worried about weight. For longer hauls I stash it inside a flourescent light tube protector. These are available at most hardware stores, usually sold near the flourescent light tubes. They are super light, can be cut to length and come with endcaps, and they provide a lot more protection than a simple soft rod sleeve. They are compressible though, not rigid, so care must be taken when handling the pack.

kayeqlI'd like to pick up a Tenkara at some point. When fishing lakes, if I can find a nice point to cast from, I will put out 50-60 feet of line to fish deeper sometimes. For the JMT, most of the fishing was in creeks, rivers, inlets and outlets. I think a Tenkara would have been perfect.

nswenson86I did it first with a regular fly rod, then the next year with a tenkara rod, and the tenkara was a better choice for the trip. Caught lots of fish with both systems, but saved quite a bit of weight with the tenkara. I think it ended up being about 5-oz for the all the fishing gear.
