GunsOfBrixtonOh yeah! You know what makes for an awesome Goodwill find? A Gen1 PlayStation! Ignoring the gaming component for a minute, there were a few models with RCA audio outputs on the back instead of the later proprietary outputs. Sony, in trying to give the little home entertainment system some credibility, put the same DAC chip in it as another $500 product of theirs they had at the time.
I thought these would be really rare... Lo and behold, I accompanied my wife on a “treasure island” trip (you’re right, that is a cute name for it. “Have you got any cheese about you?”), maybe the second time in my life, and there was one of these PlayStations there. Almost bought it! But I have some CD players already, haha.

EvshrugThat's awesome! I would never have thought to look at a Playstation for its DAC. I'm always a skeptic on audiophile claims, but I would totally pick one up to try it if I found one. You can spend thousands of dollars chasing what may ultimately be a myth. I'm willing to spend $10 to try one like this.
Another potentially great pickup is an old DVD player. Not much use on the video front, obviously, but potentially a good option as a CD/SACD player, especially since SACD doesn't seem to be supported on new UHD blu-ray players. I recently picked one up in mint condition to play CDs on my in-ceiling audio system on my main floor. It works wonderfully at $5.
I love the spirit behind Ray's post - "what can I do with this?" instead of just trashing it because it isn't the hippest audio kit that everyone's talking about on Head-Fi. Sometimes I'm amazed at what people toss out, or what people overlook. I'm no greenie, but I do think it's great to be able to keep things out of the landfill when a little creativity can find a perfectly good use for them. At its core, stereo hasn't really changed that much in a long time. Thanks for the heads up on the PS1!

GunsOfBrixtonYou're hit'n me where I live with that one--particularly about not adding it to a landfill. At the time, it was what I thought was pretty cool mfg and power-wise--a real step up from what I had. Now days I could afford to buy something cooler and certainly more current--but as you suggest--anybody can lift the lid of a trashcan, it takes real men to figure out a reason not too!

Looking for a gaming/content audio setup
Hello! I'm looking for recommendations on audio setups. I'd be planning on using it mostly for gaming. Preferably I'd like a pair of large closed back headphones since I have a big head and jaw. I'd also like to hear myself through my mic with mic monitoring. As far as budget goes, I don't really have one. But under 600$ would be nice. I can go higher if needed. The audio setup would be connected to a high performance PC. Thank you in advance for any recommendations!

Trying to buy some gear off Drop for the first time. I was told I would receive an email with a welcome to drop $10 off promo. I never received that email. Drop was able to send me emails for my login token and email for Password update. But for some reason the $10 off coupon was never sent to me.

What would be a good portable Dac/Amp to use with my HD6xx and Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone?
I am new to this hobby. I purchased a HD6XX and plan to use it with my Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone, that has a 3.5mm jack. Invest in Balancing my HD6xx headphones?
Hi... I'm a songwriter/producer. I have Drop Senn HD6xx HPs. I just bought a Topping L30 II SE HP amp to enhance my monitoring. It honestly sounds pretty good. The audio interface I'm using (an Audient iD22) has balanced outs. For those of you who've listened to the HD6xx using balanced amps and cables, do you think I should invest in that kind of setup to take advantage of the Senns potential?

Should I exchange the PC38X for better headphones?
I bought the PC38X headphones FOR GAMING and they are great, but I have NO use for a Microphone since I don't do competitive gaming and I was wondering if there were better headphone options at a similar price without a headphone, where (presumably) more of the cost was put into making it sound better. I also find that my PC38X don't get quite as loud as I would like and I was wondering if a cheap amp like the iFi Go link would draw a little more volume out of my phones. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BN6MM822?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I went with the PC38X since it was considered the best bang for buck headphones. Hello, I just joined, primarily for the audiophile products. Looking at purchasing the NHT C3 speakers for our new living room. Space is about 15 feet wide by 33 long and they will fire long ways. Space is just for general listening, music room with all equipment is downstairs, so hoping they will fill it with sound nicely. Cheers.

So, fundamentally, you've got a big amp on your hands. Definitely no DAC on board, as all of the inputs are analog.
The short answer, then, is you can do anything you want that has a dac in it. But that's no fun at all as an answer. If you're all about staying digital, your idea of adding a Bluetooth receiver is a winner.
But, if it was me, I'd totally try building an era specific full size stack. I know that's what I'd do, because I'm doing it.
I recently started accompanying my wife on her "treasure island" runs. (our adorable name for our treasure hunting trips to the local Salvation Army and goodwill stores)
You can easily pick up a CD changer from the same era for $10 bucks. Mark my words, someday CD will be the new vinyl. You can pick up full CDs for less than the price of a single download. Plenty of junk to sift through, but I've never come up empty. I've found it a very therapeutic way to scratch my audio itch and my bargain hunting needs at the same time.
A record player is harder to find, as is good vinyl. It's too trendy now. Although I did stumble upon a trove of great mid 70s Decca, DG, & London classical records a few weeks ago.
However, if you can find one, you can add it to your stack and have a pretty cool and complete throwback setup. Heck, add a cassette player for good measure.
You could easily build a late 90s rig around that receiver, with a decent little collection of discs and vinyl for under $150.
And then party like it's 1999.
