Theres a lot of "it depends" on closed back, so heres the best i can answer: · What do you look for in a closed-back headphone? ath-w1000z pretty much sums it up what im looking for (without the stupid wood on it, its the only reason i didnt buy them!). Other than that, i guess..... clear, detailed , bit of bass, not muddy in the mids. I dont want to be listening to cymbals & hi-hats all day on them, left right balanced sound. Ideally Thick or Memory foam pads & decent material that wont fall apart like the ATH-M50x does. Important the closed back end, part of the ear cup (wall) Needs to be Thick or have rubber/foam padding to give it that more lively sound many plastic ones are missing. · What kind of strap/headband do you prefer? Headband would be AKG K712 headband. doesnt need to be leather it could be material like the Awful muddy sounding Steelseries arctis headphones have. · Are there particular brands you like? Audio-Technica, Sony. ~ for closed back Depending on on model.
To be honest theres more companys that make closed backs that i dont like & could name including headphone models, I've got a list on google. e.g Sennheiser closedback: only one i know i like is the HD820 from experiance, havn't tryed any of the HD5XX but i have tried a few from HD25 up to the HD5XX range & Momentum/s didnt like them. same with AKG 52~550 range, i think the 553 was closed? & that was ok though. Actually sony have alot i don't like as well but in there case not because they are bad, but because they sound to similar e.t.c.
I've tried a lot of closed back headphones, they almost always end up Generic sounding or Generic Bassy sounding, Even the novelty multidriver ones. the dull sounding ones are always the ones with poor ear cup design as menchioned above. So I would be extremely reluctant to purchase anything before reading the reviews.

DamienRI do actually wonder what the ATH-R70x would sound like in a closed back version.

phoenixsongI have it sitting beside me (in its box) & i don't recall it having Elastic? do you mean the plastic Sliders that he leather clips onto? Eaither way as long as its not wings or easily slackens, that would be good!

DamienRThe ones that connect the sliders, which are at the ends of the headband, to the earcups. They allow the fit to stretch and accommodate people with larger heads, by allowing the headband to slide further away from the earcups
