I'm a pretty big Mr. Speakers fan, have been using the alpha prime for years now. Been really wanting to try their aeon though, and whatever new stuff they will eventually release. Personally I think they produce the best closed back design on the market, regardless of price. Very few headphones that are closed back have as large and accurate of a soundstage as what Mr. Speakers makes.
For me a closed back heaphone needs to be at least somewhat isolating from outside noise, but not so muted that you start hearing your own heartbeat or something. Just a good amount that it creates a nice black noise floor. They generally have better bass and positioning, but smaller soundstages so if it has a larger than average soundstage for a closed back, thats a plus.
I prefer a suspension strap usually, at least for heavier headphones. If they are light like the fostex, they that style headband works fine. Just needs to be make of breathable and durable material. It also needs to contour to different head shapes well, while making sure to have as much surface area make contact with your head. That keeps the weight spread out, and more comfortable overall.
Ultimately I always prefer closed back because I dont want to hear thr little sounds near me while trying to listen to my headphones. It makes for a much more intimate listening experience, and sometimes can bring out extra details that were too quiet before. It also maintains privacy, but thats a much lower priority than just making sure they sound fantastic. Like i mentioned bass usually does better, so do midrange sounds, and directional positioning of audio like in a video game. Basically any product from Mr. Speakers to me is a perfect example of what a really good closed back headphone should sound like.
