The first think I notice is the shape and finish of the fp. If it is so-called cigar shaped, there is no need for me to give it any more notice. If not, I consider the size, design, fit, and finish closed and posted. My preference is for an elegant tidy understated design. I like a roller on the clip for easier insert and removal from a pocket - or whatever. There are other solutions that work as well perhaps at the sacrifice of understatement. So, there's that. With some of the classic pens, I am familiar enough with the nomenclature to know whether the pen will be a good fit or not. For instance, I know that for me the Pelikan Souveran 200 is too small whereas their Souveran 800 is a better fit. My next concern is the design and composition of the pen's nib and barrel. My preference is two-tone imprinted gold nib. Even so, I have some coated steel nibs that do well during prolonged writing sessions. I do enjoy the simple swap out and install nib systems that some fp makers are offering as it increase my writing options with a simple maneuver. IMHO, however, the most important information about the nib that is usually not available except from user reviews is the effectiveness of its fins under different writing conditions i.e., paper, temperature, after storage, etc. Lastly, I am not as concerned about whether the grip is fitted or not as I am about the composition of the ferrule. Some inks are corrosive, after all. The use of resin creates barrel options that are at once intriguing, attractive, and somehow warmly comforting when in use. It also expands my acceptable colors. Also, a sight window to the ink reservoir is a bonus that can offset even the repulsive impact of a plastic barrel. I do not invest in cartridge-only fountain pens. The pen *must* have a converter option - unless, of course, it's a Pelkan or a button fill. Having said all that, when is Massdrop going to set up a used pen exchange/sale page? (asking for a friend)
