Victorinox lifetime warranty for my SAK.

more_vert
I hope I can get some stories here about warranty service by Victorinox. I've been googling the subject and it is a mixed-bag of good-bad I am reading.
I bought a SuperTinker SAK about 29 years ago. It has earned a lot of honest wear and tear from years of use. I bent the tip of the large blade crooked somewhere along the way. The phillips screwdriver is very worn from use. The reamer/awl is also pretty dulled from drilling into plastic parts (did this a lot for my job). Rest of the tools are in good shape.
I am considering asking Victorinox to service this as warranty. I have visited their web page and read their stuff including their position that the warranty is for defects and not normal or excessive wear. I have also read many comments (years old now) from satisfied customers who had free repairs. On the flip side, there are some complaints about Victorinox wanting to charge people for the repairs. Personally I want to believe they would at least replace my bend blade and I would hope they would throw in a replacement phillips driver and reamer. Is that realistic to ask for that under warranty?
I do have a personal experience with Leatherman's warranty, and it was superb. They replaced a multi-tool (Juice S2) that was dropped in a road and run-over by multiple cars with no questions asked. I kind of prayed a Hail Mary as I packed those parts into an envelope and mailed them in.

You got 30 years of honest use from it. The things we keep that long come to mean something to us. Put this one in a drawer, and get a new version. Or branch out, and try something new.

I think you answered your own question on the SAK warranty. I agree with the guys above on keeping it and buying a new one. I own a couple Tinker Deluxe's and also have a Leatherman Juice for the better pliers and scissors. I just can't do without the toothpick and tweezers and that wonderful slicing blade of the Tinker.

Buy a new one, and keep the current one aside, in its current condition, for sentimental reasons...

I've also got a Tinker in the 30 year old range - I'd be afraid to send it in for service for fear it might not come back!

idoc72I hear ya there. I never considered before now because I did not want to part with it for however long. But I EDC my Leatherman Juice mostly for the last 10 years, the SAK is more for "lighter" EDC days now.

BF_HammerYep, just repeating what the others have said. Just keep it for the sentiments, memories, the legacy.
