SNOWSHOES!

more_vert
Now I know that winter backpacking isn't done by loads, but it seems to be very popular nonetheless. Being an Adirondack dweller, snowshoes are required by park rules! Anyone interested in seeing more winter themed ultralight items on here? Snowshoes, 4 season tents, "mountaineering" items (crampons, stiff soled boots, super cold rated bags, hot tents, ice axes, etc.)? These items are normally really quite expensive even when found on sale and Massdrop has a tendency to help ease the load on my wallet for most of my hobbies.

Get tour skis and skins. You will be way more happy than snowshoes.
OutdoorsmanRileybeen there.... came back....
to snowshoes.
I'm into the snowshoes that my family and friends build; we're First Nations Peoples who have lived by the snowshoe forEVER. I have some "technical" snowshoes;

I prefer ours for all things backpacking and recreational;

We make them in different styles for different kinds of use. The natural materials tend to perform better, overall, in my experience than do the technical material 'shoes.
That being said; they also require more work to maintain. Like the first "natural" pair I imaged up there needs new leathers,(being replaced even now), and those "roundies" will need a few more layers of wax and varnish before I am satisfied with them.
Nothing better than snow-shoe-ing as a winter sport, IMO. Sailing over the snow on a still and crisp blue day just beats all. Following the deer on 'shoes that take you where other gear can't is the BEST!
Cheers, and Happy New Year! Here's to MUCH snow!

I'd LOVE to see a drop on the new EVA snowshoes that were just released this past month. They appear to be well thought out, but, not sure how they will perform with a heavy pack, deep snow, etc. If you HAVEN'T seen these, take a peek - really cool concept!! And, I'm only about 3 hours east of you, so, I actually look forward to our "crappy winters ". http://www.crescentmoonsnowshoes.com

Are the newer ratchet bindings any better than nylon straps? I find the latter tend to pull loose.
delnerdoTry leathers. I do leather buckle bindings, if I use ratchet, they are also leather. I think nylon is too slick, which is why it pulls loose- even if it's in a ratchet,it will pull through the ratchet under stress. If I'm using a ratchet binding it's because I want a quick release in an emergency. Like those technical eastons I have are ratchet front bindings, but I have replaced the ankle with rubber buckle-ups.* The quick release can be invaluable in certain kinds of terrain. I still want leather because the ratchet teeth can grip into it.
I kind of prefer buckle because the way I buckle puts that buckle within reach no matter what my situation is. Buckles don't give up anything when it comes to grip. On the other hand, the holes needed in the strap for buckling are a weakness, and , over time, that strap will need replaced.

*I will be replacing the front bindings eventually.

Im all for it, besides a good 4 season the only thing i need left is a pair of nano puff pants. Would love to see some different snow shoes run through here though, and snow steaks...

I really want to get into snowshoeing but I never got around to buying a pair this winter, so that would be pretty cool

BlueCrownedYou can quite frequently rent a pair to get started. Maybe that will help you get more enthused about getting out more.

MSR ascent snowshoes have done me well in winter excursions. Good flotation for the weight. In my opinion probably the best flotation for the weight of any snowshoe I have tried.

I don't know if hot tents are really UL. Insulation can get a man across the antarctic and the north pole without any need for combustible warmth. I'd like to see some mountaineering items but also realize that it doesn't fit the community. Some things I'd like to see are microspikes, 4 season tents, and 0 degree sleeping bags. Snow shoes would be nice also, but then the skiers will get jealous.

tsturzlI've seen some items here I wouldn't consider "ultralight" (eg the BioStoves that charge your phone while cooking etc.), and hot tents are very nice when you don't want to carry all the insulation and live in a nice wooded area where fuel isn't much of a concern. Cook, heat, and comfort. You can get a tent/stove combination that weighs in at 6 pounds 2 ounces. That's not bad for sleep in an 80 degree tent, something to cook on, and a place to sleep. The stove/tent is the Cimarron bundle from SeekOutside if you are curious.

NJMevecYou're totally right. And I've had several exchanges with Danny(community leader) over that issue. Really what I'd like to see happen is for a lot of the Massdrops communities to split out into more vague communities with categorizes. Like fishing gear isn't UL, but I see that all the time. It doesn't nessesarily bother me, but I also don't think a lot of the things are UL they're just vaguely outdoors related. So they do fit in the community sort of in the way that some people in the community will buy it, but there has got to be a better way to structure things.
Something like an "Outdoor" category. Then you have UL, bushcraft(I think hot tent fits here more), fishing, running, mountaineering, etc.
