The Senn 600’s (580&X) can scale well with better fodder. What are you feeding them in regards to source (files), DAC and amp? Investing in that side may bring a larger return, depending on your current rig.

rastusI thought the 58X's were an unique headphone and not tuned like a HD600? I think their original intention was to make it as much like a HD600 as possible, but changed direction in the end and pissed off a lot of people. But yeah, they do really scale with better gear, I'm a living testament to that. ~$10K worth of gears running a HD6XX as my favorite headphone :)

JackulaI have not heard the 58X’s, threw them in as I’m sure they can scale with gear, with the heritage they have. Was going to, and still may buy a pair to gift with the modded Aune T1’s as grad presents, but they were shipping too late. I got a used pair of 580’s instead and luckily a used (not really at all) Amplifier Surgery cable as the old one that came with them was disappointing. I first thought O-well this is what 580’s sound like, then swapped cables, almost kept them both...A selfish part of this plan is that I have twin nephews graduating next year; one will get 600’s and the other 650’s with modded T1’s, and I will have then sampled most of the lineage, 598‘s (open), 580‘s, 600’s & 650’s. I can then tell the cousins to share cans, and they can use this personal preference knowledge to help them make any future can choice, in dynamic at least. Yes I was surprised at MD/Senn changing horses mid-stream with the 58X’s, but the lower impedance will/has made them more marketable for portable/low power use. I told my nephew who got the vintage 580’s, to not even think of plugging them into just a phone... he only has the 1/4” jack now though anyway;)

JoeKnottI have not heard Schiit, though from all I have read, I think I can place them relative to the Aune T1, with which I am very familiar. I would look still, at investing in a DAC/amp upgrade. The other direction is planars perhaps, to broaden your can lineup, then upgrade the signal and power side. Tidal HiFi for streaming is currently the best, just have to ignore and move past the JZ BS. MQA is still a shill scam, but hey, we are streaming here and it works for this...

rastusI must have missed the fact that they were planning HD 58X originally to be more similar to HD 600. I thought they were always planning on using the newer Senn HD series 150Ω drivers. I'm a bit leery of claiming that they will scale as well as their progenitors based on the drastic differences in driver design compared to the legacy HD series.
Congrats on sampling the whole series though. I have never managed to get my hands on the old 580s.

HeeftyThey were targeting the 580/580 jubilee, the 580 jubilee is essentially the 600 in different clothes. The early frequency response graphs were quite different, not saying I didn't like the look of the change but some had already bought in on a "different" headphone.

ElectronicVicesSo if you want to see the difference between a 600 and 650 the 58X would be a good purchase?

HeeftyI'm basing this "scaling capability" of the 58X's on what I heard from a discussion with a Senn field rep., about the company - not the cans,, while never hearing a set; "Sennheiser is a very conservative German family company" means to me that they will not take a risk nor compromise quality in the design of such a set of cans with their name on them. Yes, I also have some insider knowledge;) I'm a bit German... I may still pick up a pair of the 58X's since it looks like with the simple removal of the black foam next to the grill (cosmetic?) and adding a small piece of felt, you take out the handicap they put in, to protect the HD660 market placement.
The HD580 cans are essentially the first version of the HD600’s w/o the blue/black marbled plastic, you can pop on the metal mesh screens of a 600/650 they fit, an even more open sound, but I like the retro-look of those 580’s screens. Senn knew they had a hit and tried the carbon look with the Jubilee version, collectors item now... only 4,000 made... and then they went with the 600 marbled look to differentiate them from the competition. They are sometimes too much of an honest set of cans some have said in the old reviews - revealing flaws, the cans ‘O’ Truth, but oh well - because the real hunt is for the best recordings anyway, not the Franken-recordings we hear so often now. You can really hear the falseness of auto-tuned voices… Why I got them for a gift, this nephew even has a set of pipes that can punch out a song himself, should have seen his face, what this was really for, when I set him up,, and played Living For The City in 24/96... It is also a "sleeper" looking set of cans/dac/amp, that hopefully won't get lifted out of his dorm room...

But,, I really want a set of the true HD580 Jubilee's, if I can snag a pair... to keep as a reference "Can Zero".

JoeKnottDidn't pickup a pair of these and from what I've gleamed in the reviews/updated graphs I don't think you're going to get a good idea of how the 600/650 compare from this can. Don't like making assertions I can't back up with objective specs or personal experience.

rastus The impedance curves on the new drivers are very similar to the old ones, so I suppose it could definitely scale similarly.
I might be in the market for the HD 58X at some point too, just not before I move in a couple months (massdrop shipping times...). From what I hear they actually have better high end performance than the 660S which is why I've been less interested in those. If not, what you're saying about removing the foam/felt has definitely captured my interest as well, so I'll still have some fun with them.
