infinitymdm - I am a female and I’d strongly suggest you take your girlfriend to any local gear shop and get her properly fitted for a backpack. I went to REI because it was convenient. They measured me and properly fitted me for a backpack. I was also able to try on many different types of packs. This is a tremendous help in making a good decision. I also recommend you have her fitted and try on many different types of hiking footwear, this can be done at an REI as well. It’s so importent to get the right shoe and the right fit for your hiking needs. I used to wear boots until my son convinced me to try a lite hiking shoe. I ended up going with the La Sportiva Mountain Running shoe. I’ve worn it in very cold and very hot temperatures, as well as wet conditions. I’m still loving them. Trying on before buying is the best way to go. Getting fitted somewhere doesn’t mean you have to purchase your gear there. Although I have invested quite a bit at REI.
