Interest Check: 2-Player Board Games

search
Greetings everyone,
We want to know what 2-player board games all of you are into. They don’t need to be strictly for two people, but the more they’re designated for one-on-one play the better. We’re always looking to stay in tune with the community so let us know what you like, dislike, love, and not. Here are some questions to help inspire your opinions and ideas:
· What is your favorite board game for two people? · Do you prefer dice games, games with cards, tokens, or a mix of everything? · Are there particular game brands or publishers you like?
Your suggestions and feedback are taken into account when we look for products to put on the site so tell us what you like, what you don’t like and any preferences you have in between.
Thanks!

GMT has published a large selection of 2-Player games, several of which are favorites at our house including: Commands & Colors Ancients (Base game snd 7 expansion sets) Commands & Colors Napoleonics ( Base game and 5 expansion sets) Commands & Colors Medieval Commands & Colors Samurai Battles Also... Games Workshop Space Hulk (Base game and 3 expansions) Axis & Allies Battle of the Bulge And the old Avalon warhorses: Panzer Blitz, Panzer Leader, and Starship Troopers. Plus a couple of classics: Chess and Go. We would likely play more, but there are only so many hours in the day.
I love Star Wars Destiny. KeyForge Cribbage
The Duke - chess like, but it's not up to who has the most chess knowledge to win 7 Wonders Duel - 7 Wonders but for two people. Drafting style game, made simple for two players Lords of Waterdeep - DnD themed worker placement. Great for 2, scales up to 5 fine. Viticulture - Very dense wine making worker placement game. Great for 2, scales up to 4 fine. The last two me and my wife enjoy, but The Duke and 7 Wonders Duels are staples for us
Hive. Easily portable and can play pretty much anywhere since no board is actually needed.
· What is your favorite board game for two people? Dominion - Not strictly a board game, but you get the idea. · Do you prefer dice games, games with cards, tokens, or a mix of everything? Cards usually. I can carry them around. A mix is good after that. I like the hard ones, not easy. · Are there particular game brands or publishers you like? Not really.
One of my all time favorite two player game is MasterMind. Great strategy, fast games, great fun.
I didn’t see anyone mention Rivals for Catan. It plays so seamlessly, and I really feel there’s a good amount of strategy. I also really like the Catan dice game.
I only play 1 player board games.
My wife and I have been obsessed with Descent: Journeys in the Darkness lately. The Road to Legend app you can use in conjunction with the game make playing with 2 people so much fun. We also play Machi Koro, Harry Potter: Battle for Hogwarts, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Card Game, and Boss Monster.
Lost Cities: the card game and Dice Cities are a staple for my wife and me, Star Realms and Star Wars Rebellion for me and my son. I do like using the apps to play cooperative with Descent and Star Wars Imperial Assault.
War of the Ring, Patchwork, Onitama
War of the Ring, Twilight Struggle, Raptor, 7 Wonders: Duel, Onitama, Ascension (4-player game, but plays best 2-3), Biblios, Star Realms
love 2 player games i mostly only have one other person to play with any way.
I've heard wonderful things about Codenames: Duet!
Yamlicious
Oh damn, did not know they made a 2-player version. Will check that out.
Heads up 2 board per player Puerto Rico, alternating turns between the two players (turn 1:player 1 board A , turn 2: player 2 board A, turn 3: player 1 board B, turn 4; player 2 board B, etc...), is the most satisfying / strategically fun without being overwhelming heads up game! so much ability for creativity!
Patchwork, 7 Wonders Duel, Jaipur, Lost Cities: The Card Game, Cave vs Cave, Steve Realms

I did, but now I wish there was a game called Steve Realms...

Heard great things about Patchwork. Need to get on that.

If I'm going to play a 2 player game, i gravitate towards 2 player only games: Yinch (or any of the GIPF series) Santorini Hive Jarl/The Duke Crokinole Kamisado Hanamikoji Starfighter Rum and Bones 2nd Tide Thunder & Lightning Stronghold 2nd Edition Battleline Raptor
My favorite two player game is Acquire, although modern gamers wouldn’t be interested. So, instead I will say Hero Realms. I like a mixture of components in games best.
7 wonders dual
Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game has always been a favorite, and with the release of 2.0, it’s even better than ever!
If it’s two players then probably co-op and deck builders. Ones that are easy to explain and bring to the table. Two player games are what I target to play with my wife who is not a big gamer. We’ve really enjoyed... Carcassone Lanterns Battle for Hogwarts DB Big Book of Madness Dice City
Santorini is a god-tier two player game, and one of my personal overall favorites.
The two player games that get the most table time with my wife and I are: Jaipur Summoner Wars Carcassone (can have more players, but 2 works well) Eko (can be more players, but 2 works well) Sonar Cribbage Backgammon My personal favorites are: Summoner Wars Star Wars Rebellion War of the Ring 2nd Ed. Command & Colors Series (Ancients, Napoleonics, Battle Cry, Memoir 44, Great War, Abbadon)
MRSalem
Star Wars Rebellion is one of my favorite 2 player only games but I can’t get my wife to play.
Chaffee1921
Understood. My Mrs. is the same. She likes the light games. The heavier stuff is for when a gaming group buddy stops by.
Our current favorites 2P only (or really only should be played with 2p): 7 Wonders Duel Onitama Lost Cities Hero Realms Valley of the Kings Innovation Mottainai Patchwork BattleLore
Games that work very well at 2p Castles of Burgundy Sagrada 878 Vikings Arkham Horror: The Card Game Elder Sign Imperial Settlers Pathfinder Adventure Card Game
sch21c
I believe Arkham card game is only for 1 or 2 players
Pixelpush3r
With one core set it's 2P (though really if you're playing 2P you should have 2 core sets). We play 4p all the time. The game scales very well with increases in investigators.
