Funny they used to be a 5$ a pairs, but people went crazy about it and the price went up the roof.
Got a pair for $24 with a promo. They're pretty nice. Don't get the hate for them. Guess hipsters don't like their precious brand altered a bit.
Their loss I guess.
Stick a fork in ‘em!
So I ended up getting a pair of the Mono Black chucks from Nike directly for $69.28 after making a free Nike+ account which unlocks free shipping and a 30 day free returns. It's been about two weeks of heavy wear and so far it has been great with all of the new features really coming together to make a fantastic revision of an iconic sneaker. I've replaced the black laces with 54" dark-grey ones I purchased off amazon to make them not look so boot-like from afar and scotchguarded the hell out of the fabric before stains have a chance.
The outer canvas is a bit stiffer due to the lovely padding so the shoe tends to bend and crease in odd ways at the start but it seems to be loosening up as I wear them. I've also never had an issue with the tongue shifting now that the elastic straps on the sides have been added, a massive improvement! Lastly, even after miles of walking around huge malls and even larger parking lots, I'm not dealing with the fallen arches and sore heels that my older chucks inflicted.
Just for those that don't know about these, after Nike's purchase of the Converse brand they decided to make a version of the ever-fashionable Chuck Taylors to better match what people expect from shoes. Namely these are visually the same as previous Chucks with a lot of comfort-focused additions stemming from Nike's experience in making comfortable shoes. Here's the official copy: "The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star II retains the iconic Chuck Taylor All Star silhouette you know and love, but is built for more to better meet the demands of your “on the go” lifestyle. Now, it’s available in our popular monochromatic colors to give this innovative sneaker a more classic look. The new stylish expressions goes along with established Chuck II features like Nike Lunarlon insole cushioning, padded non-slip tongue and super soft micro-suede lining. "
