Baratza grinders .... I'm interested in the Sette 270 or 270-W, BUT ... Early models were plagued by motor failures ,the -W weighing was pretty inconsistent, they often need to be shimmed to make good espresso. I do a lot of drip/manual coffee, and tho' Baratza has a 'BG' burr set for this, their website implies they are working with the burr OEM to make better burrs ...soon... (too many 'fines' in the BG). Sette is a GREAT idea at a great price, but needs revisions I think.
I recently upgraded from my trusty Baratza Encore grinder to the Sette 270W. If you dont have a good burr grinder, the Encore is a great value. But it's loud and its slow. And the burrs need replaced about annually ($40). It takes about as long to heat my water as it takes the Encore to grind. The coarseness adjustment is a bit funky too - every unit is different so you have to play it by ear and readjust after cleaning, and if your into espresso it doesn't have quite the fine control you want. Still a great value. The Sette is everything the Encore isn't. Fast, quieter, lower maintenance, more accurate. The built-in scale is really sweet, too. But like triple the cost.
