In my home town, despite the fact it's legal to posses and wear body armor (excepting convicted felons and anyone with any variety of dometic violence conviction), doing so when not a member of law enforcement or some other officially sanctioned governmental group is a absolute guarantee you will be stopped and searched by the cops should they see you wearing it. You MIGHT be able to get away leaving it to collect dusk in your closet, and calling it a "novelty item"--quite the expensive novelty--but walk around wearing it for long enough and you will for sure be treated to a very thorough going-over from some boys or girlsnin blue. And if they don't find anything illegal on you during that initial search they'll keep finding reasons to do more of them.
In fact, our here in the wild west, you can open-carry a loaded gun in public without too much trouble, depending upon exaclty where in public you go, but body armor will cause major headaches from the police. And I can kind of understand where they're coming from.
