This is why I hate M50Xs and why I think they just need to dissapear from mass drop. You can't find any good polls that DON'T have anything gaming or M50X related. Gaming marketed headphones from typically 'gaming' companies, are more often than not, horrible.

NeenerManWhy does it matter if polls have gaming/ATH-M50x stuff? No one's gonna vote for the gaming stuff, so it doesn't affect anything. And there's especially nothing wrong with the M50x, the fact that it regularly gets over 1500 votes clearly means people think they're good headphones and want to buy them. Why should they be removed? The whole point of this website is for more people to buy the same product, if the M50x gets a drop, tons of people will buy it, being the purpose of Massdrop.

DefenestrationI get what you're saying. It's the fact there's people buying and looking into something that doesn't fit their intended purpose. Gaming on M50Xs?... No. There's no sound stage, lack of imaging, it's all straightforward and bass. They're not even 'monitors'. They're too dark to be neutral. The gaming stuff usually doesn't get dropped, which is no big deal and back to the M50 thing, they're good but not quite as good as what other options are in the price range that actually fit the purpose others want them for. People don't really do their research. It's like Android Vs iPhone. There's a lot of phones running android that are WAAY BETTER in every aspect compared to the iPhone but people just buy something pathetic or an iPhone that's more expensive to maintain and to purchase than something like a nice Asus Zenfone. It's a name and popularity. Beats are popular because they're slightly better than typical headphones you find in wal-mart and they're popular. People don't know that there's better because they haven't looked for better. They just assume Beats are the top of the line.

NeenerManWell the M50x may not be ideal gaming headphones, but the poll is just for daily headphones, it serves other purposes well. I know what you mean about iPhones and Beats though, but I figure, if people want to waste their money, let them.

NeenerManAgreed. As before where I just didn't like these headphones, I now despise them. They are Over rated as F***. It's at the point where I'm seeing comments like "best headphones ever" "get m50x's and you will Never need anything else"... Smh it is sad that this ignorance exists :( trying to get drops of decent headphones, and this scenario happens, ~ Best open back planar magnetics over $500, option 1) 30 votes, option 2) 65 votes, option 3, M50x 21,966 votes

InztructionzSennheiser HD 558 is warm, not too bassy, Superlux HD 668B and although is 56 ohms my iPhone 5s can power it. Sometimes you can find Beyerdynamic DT770s around the price of the M50Xs. I'm sure you could find more if you go to headfi.org and search M50X alternatives.

NeenerManHere is a story NeenerMan from my perspective which I think might broaden your interpretation of the consumer.
My Razor Kraken Pro was replaced under warranty and then still did not last a year between the original purchase and the replacement. Though I had on-ear headphones from childhood that still worked. This is the biggest issues with gaming products: Consumers move on and move forward, therefore product durability is not a highly valued aspect. I thought I was buying a premium product, but my experience was not supporting the product experience.
Durability is highly valued for me, regardless of enjoying video games versus other media and entertainment. Durability means I get value for the money I spent over a longer period of time. I drove a Mitsubishi Mirage I bought for $1,000 for roughly 100,000 miles. It's durability was able to have me in a car at the cost of 100 miles a dollar.
So I needed a durable and good quality head set. I researched for months on purchasing my next set of headphones. I made a list of "features" I wanted. Over-ear, mic, durability, comfort, and replaceable cord were on the list. As I researched I found a very big difference between cost for headsets and headphones, though the mic on my previous gaming headset was pretty terrible. I began to add weight to the different qualities, this is when I began to realize that the mic was not so high on the list. It was more important that I spend the money once, and have a set of cans I can enjoy with my laptop watching a movie, or at work listening to music, or at home gaming on the pc.
This is where I believe you are mistaking the needs and wants of the consumer. You are using an obviously more educated mindset toward audio than me, to address why M50x's are not great for gaming compared to other headphones in the same price range. You are valuing simply one aspect, which you understand, from your viewpoint of being a super enthusiast. While many more individuals are more akin to my mindset, simply trying to get educated enough to make a great value purchase along the fringe where premium brands meet premium value because of their durability and quality and price create a sweet spot.
Many of us have gaming in our daily grind and use those same headphones for other activities, many of us do not want to spend money on more than 1 set of over ear headphones.
If it was not for my foray into the audiophile community I would have never known the value and quality of the M50x'x I have today.
M50x's are a great quality, great comfort, great durability, and good enough sound for me the average ignorant consumer. I can begin my day by collapsing the unit and tossing em in my bag, then throw my bag in the car and drive to work. At work I wear them while fixing things at my desk sometimes with very loud outer noise from a dremel or bench grinder, but these headphones block out enough noise that I can still listen to YouTube videos or Hulu shows on the computer. Then I throw em in my bag and head home and plug em in to get online and play games with friends while chatting over teamspeak, and watching some movies or shows as well. They make Les Miserables sound great, and they work just fine for first person shooters or mobas. Then I plug them into my phone and listen to ASMR videos as I fall to sleep. They get knocked and tossed around as I toss and turn, till they eventually come off where they may get knocked onto the floor. Then I wake up and do it all again. These headphones house my head for easily 8 hrs a day if not 12 or more, and that does not include however long they last on my head while I sleep.

ResistImpulseI see where you are coming drom and I totally agree. Though there are headphones that suit those needs except a bit better but you may also be spending just slightly more. I see why these are so popular and i guess ive focussednon soundmore thanwhat they do best and that is go everywhere and isolate sound. Its like a dual sport motorcycle, it doesnt do everything the best but it can go pretty much everywhere. With some modification I think i coul tun them more into an enjoyable than serious headphone. To people that lnow theyre getting something like the M5x and havent had something more....Spacious and home listening, I can see whwre thm50x is great. I had the M20x, i gamed on them and it was fun when i EQed them and artificially widened the soundstage theough means of audio filters and a lot of other crap. Thank you for opening my eyes more to the average consumer. I forget sometimes that not everyone looking for good headphones can find good headphones that fo wha they meed wothout losing some features they want. Personall, the soundstage and shallow earcups get me on the ath monitors. Those are the only two features I dislike. I should also mention, im getting more into modding headphones so detarchable cablesare just a matter of a drill bit and my choice of connectirs. I see why people wouldnt want to drill and solder amd stuff orreplace things in their headphones. Thank you for bringing something. i over look to light without being hostile about it. Its much appreciated.

NeenerManNot a problem NeenerMan. I wanted to share my story because I made a bad purchase then I did a lot of research before coming to the M50x. The experience I had made me gracious for having such a community I could tap into to find that great pair of headphones. I am sure that headphone enthusiasts and audiophiles can dive much deeper about a lot of things that are valued like sound stage and the drivers and balance and the backs being open or closed. I just do not share the same passion for spending time and money to understand it all.
The M50x was my first step into that audio enthusiast experience and it was awesome enough for me to buy a pair of IEMs about a year later. I got the Shure 215se because the reviews and price point. Though I really enjoy getting an experience that closes me off from the outside, I also enjoy comfort and ease of use. I do not see taking my next step until I have the money and time for researching some custom IEMs. I imagine a day when I can wear IEMs and sleep or nap without discomfort.
I had difficulties with soldering the thin wires and close connections when trying to repair cords on headphones. Do you have any sites you recommend for tips, tricks, tutorials for doing audiophile electronics work? I have toyed with the idea of making a set of these m50x's into bluetooth headphones. You ever check out the components available through digikey?

ResistImpulseI'm very new to headphone recabling. I know more about it than I do have experience actually doing it. I'd think headfi.org would give plenty or forums but filtering through those is harsh. The only thing I think that would help with especially thin wire is recable the headphone if it's the OEM cable or purchase some cables from http://www.markertek.com/. I'm getting a 4 conductor cable from Belden and a decent length of 2 conductor cable from Mogami. A thinner iron head and thinner solder wire would help as well as something to clamp a length of wire and the headphones. There's a WIDE range of products that you can attach to your M50s that will receive a bluetooth signal and output to a 3.5mm. You may need to make your own cable for it. Here is something to check out

. There are bigger and likely more powerful on the market somewhere.

DefenestrationWhen I joined massdrop, there was a VARIETY of items to buy at group discounts. It was fun! Now every other headphone drop is the m50x. And for the price or a little bit more, you can get a better headphone that doesn't need an amp, that works well as a day to day headphone! I still have and love my original sennheiser momentums. Are the ear cups slightly small, sure, but they sound leaps and bounds better than the m50x and are meant to be portable 'enjoy your music' kind of cans. The m50 were built and developed as a studio monitor. You can tell me a million times over they are good for the money, but they aren't. Popular or not, there are much better options than the m50x.

InztructionzI still think the original over ear sennheiser momentums sound fantastic. And now that the 2.0 version is out, you can find them for fairly cheap. They are musical and fun, and they have (imo) great isolation. With an amp they sound even better, but they do great without. If you don't have huge ears, they'll be fine, and the real leather cups feel great over my ears. I got the m50 years ago, it's a 50th anniversary edition from AT. When I first listened to them (after using the V moda LP) I was highly disappointed. They haven't been used since.

NeenerManyeah i mean i only want them for audio mixing and that's why i voted for them, but looking at various reviews im beginning to think the beyerdynamic 770 pro would be a better choice.

DashriderI've done some research on the two and usually the 770 pro is favored for it's clarity and closer to neutral response.
