Amen to that. Of course, I think the grip on the Grip/ Mini Grip feels like garbage compared to even supposedly lesser-calibre knives like the Delica, Kizer's Sovereign, or Boker's Kihon. Forgive my blasphemy, but I just don't like Benchmade. They feel too light and uncontrolled in my hand; their 154CM steel didn't perform as well for me as the 154CM blades from other companies, i.e., Protech and Piranha; and they're just kind of borning stylistically--so many of their models look the very similar. And I hate how every year they make a big fuss about certain models being "discontinued", but what they really mean is model number "A1A" will now be made with a different style of pocket clip and 1/8" shorter/longer blade, will be designated the "A1A-B", and will no cost 20% more than the "discontinued" old "A1A".
I know there are die-harr Benchmade fans, and more power to them--if Benchmade knives work for them, I'm certainly not trying to change their minds. But I just started collecting knives within the past year, before that I knew nothing about them. And as someone coming to the industry with callow and unbiased eyes, Benchmade seemer to have a better reputation than product catalogue.
As an Oregonian it saddens me to say that Benchmade is highly over rated these days. They ain't what they used to be.
Edit. The only Benchmade I have bought in the last ten years was a mini grip, and I returned it to Amazon as soon as I touched it. Centering was off and it felt CHEAP in the hand.
CPM-20V and M390 which I think are equivalent steels from two different steel producers and in terms of properties/capabilities might be my top choice it isn't the best edge retention but it does have great capabilities all around.
