this is a taaaad bit moving to far, but atc makes really great monitors, not even close to my budge though
Hi - heard pretty good things about the ATC's but many find them harsh. One great monitor that had been in production for years is the Dynaudio BM15A (pretty large with 10" woofer and incredible power) and I was able to get a pair for about 50% off since they are probably discontinued - but maybe a large order from Massdrop would still be possible. Very high quality monitors are also the Neumann KH310A (three way) and the amazing little Unity Audio The Rock MKII. I own both (and yup, you've guessed it, I'm a shameless braggart afflicted with permanent and untreatable studio monitor psychosis). The Rock at first may come across as a little harsh but has amazing definition across a wide frequency spectrum (even at roughly 35 Hz) and, due to its clarity, can be used at lower volumes to avoid fatigue. Over time, I like them more and more for my composing and mastering. The KH310A's are not harsh and have outstanding imaging and frequency extension but are more expensive. General rules on monitor buying I've heard several times are (1) listen before you buy and (2) buy the best you can afford. I do not follow either rule.
Thats why I have the older O300 ;) Also see they are closed boxes going to 25Hz. It's really outstanding. But expensive ;(
