I think there was a program called flux that basically does what those glasses are supposed to do.
I've been using the Crystalline lenses from Gunnar (clear ones) for about a year now for retouching/photography work and they definitely help a lot with eye strain. The only issue with them is they give off the very slightest magenta tint, so I wouldn't recommend doing color critical work with these on.
Still exists for macs. For Linux there's also redshift, which does the same thing.
