I'm new to Massdrop, so don't know exactly how this phase works, but to avoid a standard layout.... would it make sense to create a new Poll?
Similarly, would it make sense to create a poll with actual items, rather than a theoretical layout?
I've been looking around for PCBs and actual products that would work for this drop, but there aren't a lot of choices.
I wasn't familiar with the Qazpad that Romevi mentioned. There are some options on this page: https://gist.github.com/bobthecow/4008256
One that is not on that list (and not really at the top of my list) is an X-keys keypad: http://xkeys.com/
Another option might be to do a drop for the GHPad (for which PCBs exist and are for sale via China), but with a few options for the switch plate layout (maybe even an option to buy multiple plates in case you want to modify the layout later), since the PCB supports multiple layouts.
I believe the poll for this is to design an all-new numeric keypad, similar to how the Infinity keyboard was developed and produced.
I'm sort of new to Massdrop as well, so I could be wrong.
That said, I mentioned the Qazpad because I thought it was a very unique take on the numpad while still retaining some simplicity and refraining from being overly complex. I missed the group buy on it by about a year, so I'm pretty bummed.
Matt3o's design is really similar, it having three rows instead of the Qazpad's two. I think that the extra row may be too much, but I'm rooting for it anyway.
I'd love for it to be deleted but I can't imagine the backlash. I'd recommend that if the layout gets submitted that there's an option for second place.
The 'Sidekick' layout by matt3o is the largest layout and is only half the size of the infinity, so I would assume that it would be cheaper than the infinity. Although, the more features they end up adding, the more expensive it will be, and people seem to want more features.
Stop voting for standard!!!
Here's hoping we get something unique. I'd personally like a QazPad as I missed out on those, but anything similar would be just as great.
I would also like to vote _against_ standard layout, as it is pointless.
I would *love* to see a wireless programmable keypad, but it doesn't seem like the keyboard community has found a good bluetooth solution, in general.
One possible layout idea: do a full matrix (all 1u), but include a bunch of POS-style keycaps in the drop.
Another idea: do a 6x6 keypad -- a group buy for the GH36.
I will be severely disappointed if the standard layout gets chosen. We already have many options for this type, and even the ones that don't work can be fixed with HID remapping.
PLEASE give us more keys.
