After you watch this you'll probably think twice about Ray Bans / Most brands... They are cheaply made and cost little to nothing to manufacture. The markup can be as high as 20x what they actually cost; Yep you read that right, that's a 2,000% markup.

MartinnYou are right Luxottica makes Almost all sunglasses in the world. I think Walmart is their only true competition. Oakley held out for as long as they could but in the end Luxottica forced them in to partnering with them or risk being fun out of business. That being said I still buy certain versions of the sunglasses since my eyes are sensitive to sunlight and my options are limited when it comes to verified UV protection. I would rather pay the price for the Luxottica made (of coarse branded with someone else name on them), then risk getting some Chinese made knockoff that may or may not have true UV protection.

Jay_FWhile I agree with you to some extent I'd just like to point out that RayBans are made in China by Luxottica Tristar. I know that doesn't make it a Chinese knockoff, but I just wanted to let you know. It is really too bad that Oakley was finally purchased by Luxottica.
In addition to this, you can get lenses which are made in the USA/Europe with all your needed protective coatings. I too have sensitive eyes; I wear Oakley frames, with prescription photochromic lenses (transitions) which were purchased through Costco (another competitor to Luxottica.) The Kirkland(Costco) brand makes some quality stuff with good polarized lenses (and of course UV) at great prices as far as I am concerned. I have heard Walmart was surprisingly good, depends on area though.
I don't know about you, but when the knockoff costs $10 to produce and the real deals cost $15 to produce, I'm going to pay the 15$ for the fakes and skip on the hundreds of dollars on the 'real' ones, when in reality it is all Chinese made. I am not saying all of the Chinese made ones are junk by the way, but the margin of markup is not worth it to me. At least I won't feel bad if I end up breaking them somehow!
I think you'd be better off buying something worth a higher price such as produced by Randolph Engineering (Oh and JFK wore them, and they are used by United States forces, specifically pilots, kinda cool) :: http://www.randolphusa.com/
Also, multiple news channels did a spot on UV protection on cheap sunglasses vs. real ones and found that most sunglasses, labeled or not had sufficient UV protection. This is one of them :: http://www.ksat.com/content/pns/ksat/news/2013/07/16/expensive-cheap-sunglasses-put-to-uv-test0.html
Good luck with finding what works for you, with all this in mind it may not matter to you and that is just fine! I would just like to inform people :)

MartinnYeah there are some version of the Ray Bans being made in China and Italy, but either way it is still all owned by one company. Just a shame that due to Luxottica cornering the market, they can charge anything they want with impunity.
