Uhhh, shipping to the continental US is free from 1Up, so you're literally saving 25 cents on this. Come on MassDrop, you need to up your game.
Is the A to A configuration a male/female cord (extension) or male/male (???)?
chriscasey
Male to Male
Can I send it back to the producer in case of failing? C:
I don't suppose USB A to A is such a good idea. But if you are sure both computers are at the same 5 volts........
This is a cool concept. Great if you plan plan on making a single cable and really trust their QC as well as your own skills not to make a mistake. However, paying $9 for less than $3 worth of materials is a big no-go for me. I'd rather order $20 worth of materials myself and have enough to make multiple cables in case mistakes are made or for future builds. Still, I can see this fitting someone's needs perfect.

Yeah, I'm the same way, but I suspect we're in the minority. Certainly my wife doesn't understand why I would want to have the materials to make ~100m of custom USB cables :)
Daed
Lol. Oddly enough my wife gets it. She actually ends up using my paracord and the occasional tool. It's helpful in justifying later purchases. It helps that I make cables for all my other hobbies and for her needs too.
mine does not work even though im sure i made everzthing according to the video. every time i connect it with something it draws so much power that the USB port shuts down because of safetyreasons. on both pc and mac. did i wire something wrong? maybe someone knows more, because the cable looks really great otherwise. had to shorten in because of the sleeve being shorter then the cable itself...
playec1992
Sounds to me like you have a short circuit. Anything that puts +5V to ground will do it, but the first thing I'd check is the shield and metal connector body.

blue paracord was too short so had to default to my own supply of OD green. Not salty at all but it would have been nice to have the correct length of paracord.
if I ordered again it would be 5 feet, 3 feet is too short for my use
p5ycho6
Happened to me too with the red. Got 36" of cable, and only 32" of paracord. Kind of sucked, but meh, hacked off some excess cable and was good to go. Sort of salty about it tho.
if the connector is already snapped down before you have inserted the wires, is there any way to unsnap it to put the wires in?
Got my cable today, Unfortunately the para-cord was badly damaged and was unusable. Other than that, the cable works fine, and I am pleased with it.
I got mine, and I think I did a few things wrong. The cable works absolutely fine, and I'm more than pleased with it, but I ended up frying my USB OTG cable because I misinterpreted the wiring instructions.. The sleeving included was unfortunately a few inches too short for the cable provided, but I cut the cable to the correct dimensions and it worked alright. The shrinkwrap also had some trouble shrinking to the size of the wire as well for some reason, so I gave up and left it without. I feel like I'm maybe not competent enough to try something like this again, but I'm satisfied with the finished product anyway.
Sweet, shipped early!

I've passed up a few of these drops... The heatshrink is just too "cobbled together" for my tastes. I'd much prefer to see some kits appear using connectors with proper molded strain reliefs. I'll probably order parts from Digikey, and I may already have suitable cable on hand. This price though, was certainly tempting.
I am curious, if any wires in the cable are twisted or if they are simply all parallel?
I'm having a lot of trouble sleeving the paracord cable, is there a tool I can use to make this a little bit easier?
Not to rain on this parade but you can just order from their website for not that much money, and get the item faster. Also have more options to choose from. When I did the math on the one I just ordered, no solder 6' red sleeved mini usb, i was only spending an extra $2.31 going straight through them. Placed my order on the 1/10/17 and it shipped from them 1/12/17.

I noticed this yesterday, cancelled my MD order and ordered direct. It cost me an extra £1.03 and there won't be a month wait, PLUS they have a far wider selection of paracord colours on their website - I got something that suits my board much better.
Can I use that cable on a Filco Keyboard (Majestouch 2)?
As an update to my comment from 21 weeks ago, my cable is still going strong in everyday use. Seriously considering getting another one now that I have a more reliable heat source that won't singe the heat shrink like I did on this one.
Why no USB-C?
theastroguy
I'd hazard to guess they don't have an easy no-solder option. USB-C has like 30 pins or something crazy
techwiz
whoa.
I found the link to the PDF assembly manual in the MD Description doesn't work. But this one does: https://1upkeyboards.com/instructions/usb-cables.html

Now the MD drop works! Thanks for updating it, MD!
Just after I buy stuff they appear on Massdrop...learning my lesson never to buy any more mech kb stuff elsewhere, and wait until it appears on Massdrop...!
2 cables add 1$ for shipping? @@
Package arrived today (Austria). All pieces of heatshrink have some sort of print on them (see photo). Is that to be expected? I sure didn't and it looks hideous! :(

Using an eraser worked remarkably well. So no acetone for me ;)
deluks
Oh cool. So everything came off? Nice. That's even simpler then!
Instructions page appears to be down....
I'm in Canada, and my package arrived today (2016-11-23). Now to find instructions on how to assemble them...
...ah! Got it. One of my plugins was blocking the video on the description page.
Hmm. It seems the paracord filler is a little thinner than the keyboard cable, so the paracord "shrinks" when pulled over the cable.
I would recommend adding one end to the cable, then pulling on the paracord, then trimming the cable to match the length of the paracord. You can see in the accompanying photo that the paracord cover came up short about 3 cm on a 1 m cable.

Paracord prolapsed, so I lost a full inch, but the heatshrink closed the gaps and I got a sense of how to do it in the future, so, you know, purpose accomplished.
