I've owned this lens before and both the image quality and build quality are trash. Nikon simply doesn't have good full frame zooms that don't cost $1k+. Save your money for a better lens or just go with m43 system. This is coming from a professional photographer.

I find it hard to believe that a Nikon kit lens is trash, considering how good all the DX and FX kit lenses I've ever used (new and old) have turned out to be.
I'm also a professional photographer, and I have this lens. I wouldn't necessarily use this lens in the studio or on a location shoot, but I wouldn't say that it's trash. That's a little strong, especially considering the price point.
I keep this lens as a travel lens. If I'm going out of the country for vacation or I'm just going around shooting personal projects, sometimes I don't want to have a massive tp prime lens. Sometimes I'm traveling to a place where being able to shoot surreptitiously trumps the need for having a really high quality lens. Sometimes I am going somewhere where I might get my kit stolen, and I'd rather lose a $400 lens than one of my $4000 lenses.
This lens is great for what it is. It's not going to be the strongest wide nor the strongest telephoto, but it has a fantastic utility as a entry level zoom. It's better than some of the other entry level zooms, and it is still ED VR. I much prefer manual focus unless I'm shooting sports or other action-style photography, and the focus ring on this is pretty damn good. Is it as good as my 28-70 2.8? Nope. Sadly, it's not. However, it's a fraction the cost.
If you're a casual shooter that is looking to get into a decent lens for less than $400, this is a good one. It's not going to break the bank and it's a great lens to keep when you need to grab something when you're off to shoot the unknown.

RidevaDemocritusI think you are right. But for home users, if they ended up getting a d610 and this, it probably won't be better than a d7100 and something like sigma 18-35/1.8 and a 50 prime.

chris.ywWell yes the APS-C pro zooms win out until you get Full frame Pro zooms, same with excellent primes. That being said a kit zoom does serve it's purpose so I won't want it's horrible, I've used one before buying my primes. However, if you really care about IQ, then yes you'd better get a prime or pay more for a better zoom.
