This lens is a good lens for e.g.: traveling with a secondary "beater" body; when one wants to leave the nicer gear in safety.
That said, in such a capacity often an older generation used lens can be had for much cheaper and is fairly disposable by comparison.
One can go with the older Nikon 28-85 AF lens, which is much cheaper at around 70 bucks used and is optically very similar; though perhaps slightly less reliable as an option. However, one can buy a second one as a backup for a total of two at around 140USD and still be hundreds of dollars richer than one would have been after buying this newer kit lens..

That others may not have stated is that Sigma and Tamron are good alternatives for lens. I don't use Nikon lens but I know a friend that does and they give great shots. That being said this is, a kit lens so don't expect much but it does work in a pinch if you need that. I'd still feel like it's a waste to buy since if you're going full frame, you might as well get the better lens to match it and get the most of your body.

I'd rather say the ones that can take teleconverters ;). Nikon has a great 24mm out for full frame but the majority of the time you can use Tamron/Sigma lens and get mostly the same IQ for a significantly lower price. Alternatively if you want more IQ, you'd go Zeiss. This is true for the majority of the range from 18-200mm range but that's where the lens stop somewhat. The teleprimes are primarily 1st party only and 3rd party ones are decent but without taking teleconverters they are limited, The Tamron 70-200/2.8 is very nice but unlike 1st party it can't really do teleconverters. There are exceptions like macros and tilt shift but the majority of normal cases, they work just as well.

lastzeroI have moved beyond sharpness and such. I value coating since it greatly affected color rendering and micro-contrast. Yes you might be able to PS it to a similar level with hard work, which will likely fail most of the time.

This is the latest 24-85 from Nikon. It was first listed on amazon in June 2012. Reviews over there average about 4.5. I believe it's a good choice at this price range. There are of course alternatives, especially if you go up in price.

This has been the standard kit lens with the D6xx for the past several years. It's a nice lens for this price, and I've gotten a lot of use from mine, though I fall into the enthusiast category.
I've owned this lens before and both the image quality and build quality are trash. Nikon simply doesn't have good full frame zooms that don't cost $1k+. Save your money for a better lens or just go with m43 system. This is coming from a professional photographer.

I think you are right. But for home users, if they ended up getting a d610 and this, it probably won't be better than a d7100 and something like sigma 18-35/1.8 and a 50 prime.

chris.ywWell yes the APS-C pro zooms win out until you get Full frame Pro zooms, same with excellent primes. That being said a kit zoom does serve it's purpose so I won't want it's horrible, I've used one before buying my primes. However, if you really care about IQ, then yes you'd better get a prime or pay more for a better zoom.

So who provides the warranty? It's not Nikon USA. I'm ok with "gray" market or non-US product, but I want to know who covers it and for how long...

And then what? If you discover a manufacturing defect as soon as you receive it? Either $370 paperweight or money out of pocket to repair in a third party repair shop, or return to Massdrop, and they will return it to their supplier, and a year later you'll have your lens back.

chzelReturn it. Plus, the tanron 24-70 2.8 can periodically be had new for around 800. That thing has 6 yrs warranty with 3-day rapid service.
