I have moved beyond sharpness and such. I value coating since it greatly affected color rendering and micro-contrast. Yes you might be able to PS it to a similar level with hard work, which will likely fail most of the time.

Well yes the APS-C pro zooms win out until you get Full frame Pro zooms, same with excellent primes. That being said a kit zoom does serve it's purpose so I won't want it's horrible, I've used one before buying my primes. However, if you really care about IQ, then yes you'd better get a prime or pay more for a better zoom.
