StalastThanks for the heads up - will keep in mind for future posts; you probably won't be able to see the wire sticking out on a low resolution image though, so I think I'll skip doing that. I generally keep the lighting in my room dim so I hadn't noticed it till earlier tonight; it's been quite a while since I've got the headphones - I think I was one of the first to receive mine (got mine on 17th I think).

tommydadogWait, that one story killed your hype? Mine out of the box sound great. Even without an amp, although I have a decent motherboard. I will be testing with an amp tomorrow. I've been listening to lossless files too. I'd have to say at the very least 1000 have received their sets and it's not like there are 100s of people complaining of the sound. There is probably around 2% or less complaining. I'd say that is decent. People expect everything to be perfect always.

crookstonComing from a production engineering and management background, a 2% chance of failure is *not* decent. Look up six sigma, for instance. With six sigma being implemented, the percent defective would be 0.00034%. With five sigma, it would be 0.023% and with four sigma, it would be 0.62%.
It's good that you're not experiencing problems though. But this just shows that QC was compromised HEAVILY on, since the product itself isn't bad, a subset of the batch is, and with varying levels of defects.

payodpandaSome bass frequencies, not all, cause distortion in mine like what you have described. As of yet, I have not received a response to any of my e-mails.

To be clear, you can contact the support number listed on your warranty card if you'd like, but I'm working with Harman to get a specific support person who will handle all k7xx related concerns. That person should be ready to go shortly after Christmas.
In the meantime, I appreciate your patience while we try to get this resolved during the holiday."

payodpandaNice of them to reply to you. Looks like replacements instead of refunds. I am almost afraid of these headphones now and was really hoping for a refund after a return.

Although I do understand the apprehension, I am paranoid about the other drops I have participated in too.

payodpandaMy fear is that these just have bad sound and some people are ok with it and some are not. I don't know that I would describe mine as having a rattle. They just distort with certain frequencies at certain volumes. I'm not thrilled with the build quality and construction either when I compare them to my Sennheisers and Grados. Hopefully your other drops will be ok. I have participated in several before this one without issue. I'm hoping this long wait to resolve the issue isn't the norm. It's the first time I have ever had an issue with a product. I did receive a pocket knife once that was covered in fingerprints, which is odd for a new knife, but it did not look as though it had been used so I didn't worry about it.

The build quality I was definitely disappointed with, that was my first qualm when I opened the package and reported in the comments here. I guess that was too early so people didn't really notice it as I got mine very early on.
I also got the Ostry KC06A, which was like $50-ish so I didn't bother much - I'm sure there is a loose connection at the 3.5mm plug, because I'm experiencing audio drops sometimes. I just thought it wasn't worth going into the trouble of replacement for.

payodpandaI have the Ostrys and I like them a lot. They have a much better sound than the K7XXs that I received. With little ear buds, you tend to get shorts if you pull them out of a device by the cord. You have to be careful, making sure to grab the jack when taking them out of a device. I am very careful with my ear buds, and I never have issues, but I have gifted ear buds to friends and they often report back with shorts after some time.
As far as the build quality of the AKGs, they are all plastic, made in China, and look to have pieces/parts that could wear out quite easily. The clamping on my set is very, very weak. So weak that I find I have to readjust them often because they slide down. If mine didn't distort, I would imagine that they would have better sound if they clamped stiffly enough to get a good seal.

theupandcomingcoreyYes, the Ostry is pretty good for the price. I have owned other cheap ($20) made in China IEMs, which lasted about a year but had great sound quality; I would say about as good as the Ostrys. It was designed in India and made in China, the brand is called Tekfusion.

In my mind, "made in China" does not necessarily mean bad quality, although most of the times it is. It's just cheap labour, but they can still make good quality products in China - Apple products are made in China too.
Also from what I know (which I admit is not much) the AKG 7** line is plastic, no metal casings, yet the overall product quality ratings are high. So I would argue that these have the potential to be good headphones, but clearly the QC has failed miserably.
I might overlook the product quality (for this price) if the core of the headphones is solid - the electronics are stable and the sound quality is good; and I can say neither of those is true at least for the set that I received.
EDIT - Also, about the clamping issue, I find my set to be very comfortable for my head shape. I can keep wearing them for an extended period of time without noticing they're on my head, except when I hear the bass rattling. payodpandaI was tempted to try and take mine apart to see if I could figure out what is wrong with them, but I don't want to void any sort of warranty so I am just going to try and return them. I am not a fan of Apple products either. I have quality products from China though. I was hoping these AKGs, being made by Harman, would be a first rate headphone. I saw that retail was like 650 or 750 or something like that. More like we payed 200 and got what we payed for if we got a pair that works. Maybe these were rushed for the holidays, thus the design and qc issues.

So I thought, "let's just try taking the cable out and inserting it again in the XLR jack". And guess what I found? A thin string jutting out from the jack area. At first I thought it was a spider web so I pressed on it, and it just bent. WIRES. COMING OUT OF THE JOINT EDGE. This is unbelievable. Attaching pics for others like me who wouldn't believe such a thing without proof.
PS. I've been trying to contact MD Support since the 18th, I still haven't got ANY response from them yet. This is the latest development in my list of grievances with this product (serial# delivered above #300 when promised was below, bass rattle / treble hiss, and now this). I know that we're getting the product for cheap, so compromises can be made on the supply chain arguably, but compromising the product quality itself is very unprofessional when a level of quality matching the K702 65th AE is being claimed. I hope this is more about AKG than MD, since I still have a lot of products waiting from MD which I would like to have but this experience has made me apprehensive towards the new items I'm about to receive rather than excited about them.
