Len11Not at all "Jazzman"... there is substantially more detail in the AKG 7XX but you'll need an amp to get the best out of them. Soundstage is much larger and has more precise imagine. The 6XX are veiled and will hide a lot of badly mixed music.
DJ2ndI disagree. Both are anemic without an amp, but once properly driven, the HD6xx series has way better soundstaging and imaging. The K7XX may have better resolving power in the highs, but that doesn't mean the HD6xx are veiled.
Len11Sennheisers have more low end distortion, and less energy in the high frequencies. With the price of HD 650s backs up to $375, these AKG are a much better deal in my opinion. Now if you manage to find some HD 650s for around $270 which was their price about 4 months ago, you might want to flip a coin.
RealizerNot sure if you're making a generalization there with Sennheisers or just speaking for the HD6xx series (HD800 is definitely not lacking energy in the high frequencies). This was never an argument about pricing, just comparing performance for the OP.
Len11I'm speaking from personal experience. The HD 800 aren't even in the same category as they are very bright, the HD 6xx line is in the warm side of neutral, the 5khz+ range is more subdued than the AKG k7xx. It all depends on what sound signature you like.
Len11Sound stage and imagining are much better on the AKG 7xx than the HD6xx units. Its not just me who says this but any comparison or review of them.
JazzmanPersonally, I'd say you might do better upgrading your DAC/AMP to something a bit more refined, rather than side-grading to the K7xx. As far as the K7xx vs HD6xx debate, I like both equally. The Senns are made in Ireland which is cool, but the AKG uses memory foam earpads which is also nice. Obviously they sound different, and that's where your personal preference comes in.
RealizerI never accused you of not speaking from experience. Of course the HD800 isn't in the same category. I only mentioned it because you generalized Sennheisers as having less energy in the high frequencies (read what you wrote). I honestly don't even know why you're bringing this into the discussion. Like I said, the OP didn't ask about price so your argument really isn't relevant.
