Adding/Including Memories
I lost my dad last year (2023) and have been finding ways to include keepsakes/memories in my workstation. I've dabbled here and there with doing small woodworking projects and attempted a wrist rest from a piece of oak I picked up with him from my great uncles wood shop. I milled it to fit a 60% keyboard as I hadn't decided what keyboard I would be using it on and thought that's where most of my wrist would be in contact even typing on a full keyboard. I gave it a torched/burn appearance as I really was lost in what to do. I found an old shell casing from going hunting with my dad in my hunting pack and decided to imbed it into the end of the wrist rest so it would just have a little difference and a small story behind it as well. I have other things around my workstation from family and friends, but it just feels a little more special having worked on it and adding something small that has a memory for me to it. (Purple was my grandmothers favorite color and I have kinda now...

I just wanted to point out the Scott the President from AKRacing has already addressed the issue of what type of leather is used on the Deluxe version of the Onyx chair 2 days ago in the discussion thread. It is in fact Top Grain Leather as Scott has double confirmed this with the factory where only AKRacing chairs are made. AKRacing is the OEM of their own chairs and they do not product chairs for any other brands.
Just so everyone knows that this is the first time the Onyx series chairs are being offered in the US and is not available anywhere else but Massdrop. I am not sure where @osmija got the information he posted about this chair but he is not correct in his assumptions.
Again, this is a Top Grain Leather chair. I have also confirmed with Scott that the leather portions of this chair are made from one large piece not multiple smaller pieces. Yes there are stitching patterns being used on this chair but this is for aesthetics value only.
I am sitting in this exact chair right now and it is beautiful, supportive and comfortable. For reference I am 6'4" and 210lbs. If you have any questions I am more than happy to help just tag me in the post.
Lastly, if there are any concerns about material or build quality on any AKRacing chairs, all of their chairs include an industry leading 5/10 year warranty.
Cheers.
@linuxdynasty @Etch
Could you please ask for clarification if its made WITH top grain leather of if ALL the leather is top grain leather? very important distinction.
if this is all top grain leather and a representative for some mysterious reason used the phrase "genuine leather" (how can you make that mistake, its a HUGE one) by accident, then I will order this chair myself as it would be a ridiculously good price if all the material in the front is actual top-grain leather.
Just to show I am definitely not out here trying to sabotage a companys reputation, here is the post where their own representative called it genuine leather. http://i.imgur.com/jV2fbSo.png
Until we get confirmation that there is no genuine leather involved and this is all top-grain leather I still advice people to be cautious. If this is an all top-grain leather product then I will personally endorse it.
@linuxdynasty @AKRacingAmerica @B.Hutch
edit: just to clarify, I will remove previous posts made after confirmation is given. i have absolutely no intention to unfairly hurt AKRacings reputation, and as I posted before the chair of theirs I have tried was very comfortable. also, @AKRacingAmerica if you actually to not use any genuine leather you REALLY need to stop using the term as it is a very specific term and is used by companies because "genuine leather" tricks people into expecting high quality stuff, while it is actually the name of low-quality stuff. eagerly awaiting more information, thanks for the heads-up @B.Hutch , hope there's no bad feelings.
edit2: found the post where they called it top-grain, didnt seem very certain in it, hoping to get more clarification. will see if there are any stores or similar that have the product close to me, in that case i'll go over myself and check it out, unless we get official verification from AKRacing, in which case i trust
so while i gladly removed my posts since you've gone on the record its top-grain and no company would do that if it wasnt since that'd leave you open for legal action, i wasnt wrong in my comments, i based it on the poorly-written comment you made.
i suggest you do not use "genuine leather " to describe a top-grain leather product, and the definition of genuine is entirely irrelevant when there is a product called "genuine leather" that has nothing to do with the word "genuine", and even then there is nothing "fake" about genuine leather, its just of shit quality, its still leather.
no hard feelings :)
edit:
also since this is a top-grain leather chair (half of it anyway) i'd like to tell anyone curious about this chair that it's a great product at a great price. AKRacing make very comfortable chair, and if they use top-grain leather it is also of high quality, especially considering the price offered. if your chair ends up looking weird you have both the warranty + the guarantee from them it was top-grain, which should make this a safe purchase, as it will absolutely not have any issues in the next 10 years in the front, top-grain leather is of great quality.
Just pointing it out since you seem to mention that they have confirmed it is a full grain leather chair.
please im not sure if this is a joke or not at this point. are you for real? GENUINE LEATHER is a TYPE OF LEATHER. if you put "genuine" in front of "leather" you no longer have "genuine + leather" you have "genuine leather" as it is an actual thing.
like seriously, are you trolling me? am i being trolled by an official rep of a company?
> I don't like to question the motives of complete strangers but I do wonder.
Like once again, fucking really? you said, like it or not, your product was from genuine leather, i took the opportunity to warn other customers that the quality of genuine leather products are very low. and because i, as a customer, decided to inform other customers of something i am somehow "suspicious", or whatever you were trying to imply?
honestly how about you do what a rep shoul do and act professional?
you fucked up and used a very unfortunate choice of words since you clearly do not know much about leather, this is human and it happens. what you could have done is say "whoups, mistake on our side, will edit that out, thanks for letting us know!" but what you do is whatever the hell these replies are?
YOU fucked up, so how about YOU take some sort of responsibility and just say "whoups, my bad!"? is it really THAT hard to do your job correctly? if you're a rep working for a furniture company how about you learn a bit about the products you're selling and the material they're made from and you can avoid embarassing mistakes like calling a top-grain leather product "genuine leather", and then start telling me the dictionary definition of genuine, like thats at all relevant.
what a fucking trainwreck.
@alias topgrain is good quality leather anyway, its not full-grain but its basically shaved down full-grain and is the 2nd highest grain of leather you will find which makes it appropriate for furniture, it can however crack if thin and not maintained.
the difference between topgrain and genuine leather is massive, so the point stands.
also, i recommend you update your website and anywhere else you list info about this product, it says "real leather" everywhere which means nothing to people who know leather, most who do would likely assume its genuine leather, since you use top-grain leather you should write that out as it makes your chair a quality product, and if you spend money on quality materials then you might as well use it as a selling point.
Our site was transferred from the site hosted by AKRacing in Europe, which was written 100% by non-native English speakers. We have been slowly changing the copy to make it more representative of the way we want the brand and products to be represented in the Americas. That is simply a manpower issue, we have not had time to change them all yet and the Onyx pages just went up in the Americas on Thursday., since the product was not available here until this drop started. Obviously, I could not predict that such a brouhaha would erupt over wording that has been used in Europe for some time now, so it was not a priority.
You should not be representing a product if you are unwilling to question your knowledge and understanding of it. You assume authority and argue from a position of it. You should apologize to Osmija. You're the douche because you attempted to degrade a person who understands an aspect of your product better than you do.
And what's more, if you read about the incorrect use of "genuine" as a term for leather quality, you will see it is exactly the same as the "Corrected Grain" on your beloved Wikipedia article. You are, therefore, a douche.
SplitA term used to describe the under portion of a hide or skin, split into two or more thicknesses. Under rulings of the Federal Trade Commission, a split must be so marked and cannot be called "genuine leather" or "genuine cowhide."
You talk of "colloquial" understanding of words. There was a time when, colloquially, the word "bad" meant "good" or actually much better than good. And there are a lot more examples. But does that mean I really can't stand by the definition of "bad" as meaning, well, bad? You continue to denigrate me and my company without ever having seen his original posts. So, go to it. I am going to eat some grilled veal soon with a nice glass of wine. BTW, I know a lot of people won't approve of my dietary choices, but veal is generally defined as the meat of a milk fed calf up to three months old.
I was not wrong, you were wrong. You had stated your product was of genuine leather, I posted posts warning users about the quality problems faced with genuine leather, and that it was very dishonest of your company to represent it as a high quality product and tell customers about how great it is while also using the genuine leather, a term literally designed to trick people, in order to hype up your product.
I was in no way wrong, I was 100% correct, and you are once again wrong, "genuine leather" is an actual product, call any fashiondesigner and ask them, anyone working with primarily leather products, for example leatherbags etc, they will all say that genuine leather is a type of leather, named deceptively purposely.
Your company doesn't need anyone except your PR person (that's you) to make you look like douches. Stop treating your customers like shit, stop pretending I was wrong because I was _NICE_ to your company and deleted my comments. YOU were wrong. YOU are horrible at your job as a PR person because you do not understand how language works, you pick the wrong terms to describe things, you do not even understand your own products.
You're a joke, cant believe I go back to this thread to see why I was highlighted and see you're still spewing shit and trying to defame me. What a complete mess of a company. Had entirely dropped this, but now I'm back on the warpath, will make it a personal mission of mine to keep people away from your products.
I had entirely dropped this after they corrected THEIR mistake (emphasis on THEIR mistake, I made no mistake) but I come back to this thread after being highlighted and see they're flinging shit on me, when I was nice enough to delete my posts.
What a fucking disaster of a company, I hope they bleed money until there's nothing left of them.
smh.
Reading the Code of Federal Regulations, chapter 16, subchapter b, part 24, which I am assuming is the relevant part here, there is nothing that seems to restrict the use of the term genuine leather.
could you please inform me just in what regulation or law this is restricted? Lots of companies breaking the law if you are correct.
genuine leather is fully legal to call a product unless you misrepresent the content of said product, or have i somehow misunderstood the CFR regulations?
you're the legal expert, do inform me, maybe its time for you to imply im a corporate spy again, that part was exciting!
Now with that being said, AKRacing's responses weren't the most tactful either and could have been handled with way more grace. I have many years of experience in customer service in various industries and I would have handled it differently. And you're right Osmija, the issue should have been dropped after deletion of your posts and we all could have moved on with our lives. But, here we are stuck in a quagmire of bickering.
Osmija, did you buy a chair? Do you have any skin in the game? I do since I bought a chair. So I do have a stake in the quality of this product as a customer. Believe that I would/will not stand to being misled, but at this point that is not a concern of mine. I will gladly join your crusade if I'm proven otherwise.
So I'll ask this question here and now. What would it take to end this?
I had already stopped commenting on this thread, only reason I came back was because I was user-mentioned and saw that AKRacing reps are giving me shit while I played nice and removed every comment.
Their rep is shit at his job and instead of acting the way a rep should, professional and just get this out of the way by saying "whoups, our mistake" they continue going on about it.
It's about respect at this point, if AKRacing decided to fling shit my way because I'm not looking, then when I notice I'm clearly not going to stand in their shitflinging.
As I have mentioned in other post there is no need to drag things out. Speak your peace and move on. We are a tech community and we should be here to support each other, not tear each other down. No one is a fault here, but also no one is innocent either. Lets do our best to be respectful to each other.
Cheers.
