What cave have I been living in that I'd never heard of these shoes until just this last year? First saw them recently when I stopped to talk to a PCT thru-hiker that later passed me like a flash. He had stopped in a shady spot along the trail for lunch right where I needed to stop for a few minutes to catch my breath after a switchback climb above Meiss Meadow. I couldn't help but notice the oddly shaped toe box of his shoes and, having had reconstructive surgery for some bad hammer toes this last March, was intrigued. Of course, by the time I'd gotten home from that trip, I'd forgotten what those shoes were that he was wearing until seeing ALTRA shoes on Massdrop. "Hey, those are the shoes that skinny, fast kid was wearing!" So, I ordered a pair. They showed up yesterday. I couldn't get them on fast enough. WOW, now that's a lot of room in that toe box and nothing rubs...anywhere. I've been in the habit of buying shoes a size or so larger than I need due to the condition of my feet, but I seriously think that I didn't need to with these. They hug my arch in such a way that my feet remain firmly planted over the arch and in the heel without tightening too much. They felt so good that I just started walking around...out the door, down the street and to the local shoe store some friends own here in town to show them off. Probably a mistake in the 103 degree afternoon, but damn, they feel great. I can wiggle my toes in the toe box and, yet, they don't rub! It was on the walk home (maybe just over a mile, round-trip) that I really started examining the differences between the feel of these as compared to my old Oboz Sawtooths (wide) and new Merrill All-Out Rushs. (For what it's worth, I really, really liked those Oboz.) I found myself walking more upright and there was definitely more cushioning that either of the previously mentioned shoes, but the thing that really stood out was softer heel strike...something easy to notice when walking on sidewalks and pavement...hot, hot pavement. There was considerably less jarring on my feet, ankles and knees with these shoes than almost anything I'd ever worn before. It was at least as soft a heel strike as with my Oofos flip-flops which are like walking on a cloud. Now, these are a running shoe and not a true trail shoe and that shows up in how extremely light they are. The pair weighs less than one of my Sawtooths and I'm actually looking for a trail shoe, but if they hold up for five or six hikes... I'm really hoping that these come up on another drop soon as I'd like to try a pair in my true size which, with the width of this toe box, I'm sure will be OK on these messed up feet of mine.
