Product Description
Made by Ashland Leather Company, which was founded by two longtime employees of Chicago’s legendary Horween Leather Company, this leather bifold comes in two different versions: one with a teal Latigo horsehide exterior and a black Chromexcel interior, the other with a Horween Dublin leather exterior and a teal Latigo horsehide interior. Fitted with six card slots, it offers two hidden card pockets and one long bill pocket capable of holding US dollars and most international notes Read More
Had the wallet for about a year now and it's held up like a tank. If you're worried about how bright the teal is, don't be, as it darkens up over time and really gets that nice chromexcel look.
My stitching also was coming out after about 2 weeks of use. I took a bic lighter and heated up the metal housing. Once hot I used the metal housing to melt the thread back into place. YMMV but it has held up since then (about 1 month) without any issue. Hopefully this doesn't void our warranty!
The quality may be good, but the color is too flamboyant for me. I wanted to purchase this, but the black exterior one was sold out. Hopefully, this item can come back again with the black exterior or other colors. I just don't care for the turquoise too much.
i'm a connoisseur of overpriced crap but i cannot understand why a wallet could possibly cost this much - anyone care to explain? not trying to be an ass
georgewbushI've had the wallet now for over a year, and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. In the past I'd normally have to buy a new $30 wallet every six months or so. It pays for itself in longevity.
I had this wallet from the last drop, had stitches come out so I tried to get it fixed. Massdrop said they were out of replacements and couldn't fix it, so I got a refund. Seems like they found more of the wallets :(
ashlandleatherunfortunately I sent the wallet into Massdrop and they didn't send it back :( They said they couldn't solve my problem and gave me a refund...
I really like this wallet. But after almost 2 years of using, there are some weird spots showing on the outside of the wallet. The spot develop only at the side facing my butt. The leather on the other side is still very smooth. I always put it in the back pockets of my pants when going out, meaning I'd sit on it for the whole day everyday. When I come home I just put it on the table, not anywhere near the a heat source. I really don't know what the problem is and what would have caused it. Is there anyone having the same issue?
Here's a followup:
I now have the teal version of this wallet and have used it for a few months now. I kept the black wallet as an eventual replacement for the teal one, but what's interesting is that the second wallet doesn't exhibit the same defects as the first. The wrinkled edge was always apparent in the black wallet but became worse after about a week. No such defect has appeared on my teal wallet even though the contents are the same.
All of which confirms that my first wallet had manufacturing defects. I found it slightly disappointing that Ashland didn't address this but still ordered another wallet.
I'll add some pictures to this post later, but that might take another week because my first concern is transferring data and saves to my replacement phone before sending the old one back.
VarholiaglimpHmm. I think the issue was with the kind of leather that was used for the exterior of the wallet rather than any defect. The black wallet had a Chromexcel exterior—a leather that is incredibly soft and known for molding (and sometimes wrinkling depending on the grain of the hide) around the contents it surrounds (feet in terms of footwear, and cards in terms of wallets). The teal leather on the other hand, is made out of latigo leather which if I understand correctly is not as pliable or soft. Not sure if that helps as I now see that this conversation is quite old, but I don’t think there was a defect in the wallet, rather the two leathers used for the exterior have different characteristics that made them wear in differently over time.
@ashlandleather A few questions if you don't mind:
1. Which grain of leather is used on these - full grain or top grain or...?
2. Are these completely hand made?
3. I typically carry notes about 177 x 73 mm (W x H) - will these fit comfortably? How about coins?
4. What kind of warranty/ guarantee do you offer on this and how will this be managed for international buyers?
5. Only one note pocket seems a little sparse - any chance you can do 2 or is that coming up in another drop?
@Current buyers - Which color options are you leaning towards and why?
@Past buyers - Can you share a few more pics of your wallets? Thanks!
Just wanted to chime in that I'm still using my wallet from the first drop (blue interior and black exterior), and a year and a half later, it's still holding up really well. A few frays here and there, but the blue interior is still stunning to look at (I take it for granted and rarely spend the time to appreciate it, but it's nice to be there), the black exterior is holding up well, the corners are all holding together well, and overall I'm really satisfied with it.
I'd upload a picture, but my debit card numbers have imprinted into the front card slot's leather so you can see the numbers through it :p
I'd considering getting in on this next drop, but I don't really want a blue exterior, and this wallet is still in great shape. Highly recommended!
DrGumbyMDI have the same exact wallet. I work outside in the heat and frequently get rained on/soaked and the wallet is still totally fine. I wrap it in a plastic bag if it starts raining too hard.
H-LitchI just let mine go with it. The abuse some of my leather items deal with all tell a story and it's why I love US leather and metal work. It just holds up to it.
