does the volume dial rub against the leg inside a pants pocket and if it doesn't why don't phones use them? would be nice instead of buttons.
man this is a useless...laggy software really? trying to limit the cost but went too far... Go for SONY, Korea product < Japan Product as always
Tempted to get one but the laggy software is a let down. Does anyone know if the laggy software issue has been resolved on this version of the AK Jr?
Warubozu
Unfortunately, no. The software is as is up till now
I only want it because it's suju
audiophiles listent to kpop?
samhith
I didn't know being into a hobby forces you to enjoy only a certain music genre.
Jakeobie
but kpop?
I had the regular model a while ago and got rid of it immediately. It does sound great, but that's probably the only good thing I have to say about it. The software is straight-up unusable. Think of the lag of early Android phones like Motorola Droid and Samsung phones before the Galaxy S series, and this thing is 10 times worse than those. I'm not exaggerating. And here's a video of it. I didn't make this video, but it demonstrates my point perfectly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nziqsoCMDgA

I own AK JR Black, and you know what s going, this type of scrolling doesn't work on this machine. Its NOT LAGGY, if you trying fast scrolling, system is not able recognize it, so AK JR think you are actually click, of course you can scroll down in your library but not so fast as on mobile phones. Its good machine, its not so fast, but its still ONE of the solids build I ever seen, especially deep black anodization looks perfect. There is one more tip, don't put inside this player high resolution album artwork, this is the main reason why he is so slow... seriously. My Santana album artwork got 1200 dpi, when I open it its nightmare. Sounds good, build quality is perfect, yeah its little bit slow, depending on your album artwork resolution - yes its weird.
TextureMan
sorry for english
i would get it but that design D; why cant they just do the original? :(
Ok so KPOP aside, it states that this thing can power HD600s etc... Forgive my newbeness but is that true or wishful thinking? I use the Hd6xx and T50rp mk3 with a schiit stack and would be interested in something portable like this. Thanks
Tabi
you'd be surprised how easily you can power HD650's to quite loud volumes, your phone would probably do it. That said it won't do it well, and here's the issue, it probably drives them to a listenable level but I cant imagine the bass or dynamics would be anything to write home about. From memory the Fostex cans don't play well with portables, their a bit current hungry.
K-pop lmfao.
own this player (not the blue version but silver). They have dropped software support for this player and although it does sound great, there are a lot of new/better players for the money.
Ahhh another overpriced AK DAP on Massdrop! Go figure!

I hear and respect that.
Icefalkon
I may still get the iBasso for when I get back into collecting IEMs but right now I'm into over ears
Old recycleable material.
It shouldn't be that difficult to add WiFi and streaming support for Tidal, Deezer, etc.. I'm so over DAPs with no streaming. :(

Actually, I've auditioned the V30 next to the Dragonfly on my Hifiman X V2's. The Dragonfly resolves better and has better separation. I owned the V20 and my brother owns the V30. To both of our ears, the Dragonfly simply performs better. Not that the V30 and V20 are bad, they just don't sound as good as the Dragonfly.

The Pioneer XDP-30R streams TuneIn, Deezer and Tidal via Wi-Fi and can stream MQA files with the recent updates (available nicely via Wi-Fi).
B&H has the Pioneer XDP-30R on sale for $199 at this time. I love mine, bought for that price from Pioneer on Black Friday.
Isn't this a limited version that was only released in Korea 2-3 years ago? Must not have been very popular if they still have unsold stock lying around.
Think iBasso offers better bang for the buck

I agree, however, the DX80 is $359...that's a lot more than this guy. But there I personally would go with the Cayin N3 over this any day of the week. I listened to the N3 at the NYC CanJam this past February and I almost bought one (but my money was allocated towards Woo Audio).
Icefalkon
Haven't heard the N3 but am using one of their amps and pretty happy. That said I realize the iBasso costs more but worth saving and waiting for good instead of buying meh.
rather have the Rocktigers
I'd be interested at $150 with a year of Tidal. Oh wait.
If this wasn't super junior branded i might be interested. I don't think any audiophile would want that.... try marketing to teenage korean girls
If I didn't pick up a used Cayin i5, I'd be curious to dip my toes in the "AK" waters since most of their daps are ridiculously priced. But the touchscreen and lack of features is definitely not worth the cost. At least the i5 is fairly snappy, warm sounding (my preference) and has WiFi, BT and can download Google play apps. Cayin could improve the UI a bit but as it is, much better than what is seen in the video for the AK Jr.
I definitely would spend $200 on a dap but not the AK jr especially in this day in age where most have WiFi, BT, ability to stream, responsive software. Really no excuse not to include them? Pricey for what it is. As someone else said-meh. Pass. If anyone wants a new Explorer DAP and dock in cherry I've got one. Just don't use it since I got the i5 montbs before while waiting so long for echobox to ship the daps.
How does this compare with the xDuoo X3? I've been using that for the last year to listen to tunes in my car via a cassette tape adapter (old car). The line out on it is nice for that use, but the menu is atrocious to try to use without looking at it. Does this fare any better on that front?

Haven't gotten one yet but the reviews online seem to say that it has a solid touch screen interface. Astell & Kern is a reputable brand and their name pops up on most lists of best DAPs (not necessarily this model)
For the price, this is a great deal. However, this dap does not offer a big sound improvement over ordinary smart phones (wm8740 as the dac chip). To make things worse, users have to sacrifice wifi, bluetooth, and the various music apps for the little performance step-up.
Does anyone have any sense of how good this thing sounds compared to an LG V20. Personally, I have found that the quad dac on the LG V20 has been enough to adequately drive all of my in ears and my over ears to a reasonable extent. The sound quality is also pretty good and I would say that it is comparable to some of these small portable usb Dacs like the dragonfly or the centrance dacport slim you see floating around.
MFillmore
The DAC chip is the WM8740 which is considered a "Good" quality DAC but this is in the range of cell phones or mobile devices(or low power devices), the early uses of this chip was on the iPhones and iPods. the ESS dac on you V20 is actually 4 lower quality dacs(In a single chip) doing a single job each vs this WM DAC which is doing all of them on it's own. For you this will be similar to something like a side-grade. But the benefit for you is that you get to show off that you have a Astell&Kern device.
If you want something that is a improvement look for stuff with a AKM4490 although it will feel a bit too smooth with it's high treble lowered. Or look for something with the CS4398 which has a sharp treble/bass that is fairly accurate but no sound stage at all.
Does it sound better than Shanling M2 or M2s? Or M5?
This or Aune M1S? I own an Xduoo X10 and i would like to listen to another dap.
Wonder how many people would have bought the player if it didn't have that K-Pop crap all over it.

No one. AK Jr is so hopelessly slow, you'd fare better with a gen1 Android phones running Oreo
DimaG
Agreed....
this product should be at the low 100s. no bluetooth aptx. no wifi. the wolfson dac is worth $5 bucks.. meh. PASS~

Buy the Cayin N3. I have both. Cayin would fit the bill for a smaller profile.
Tsar_Bomba
It has the ak4490 the chip that is both hated loved by many. Mainly due to how it colors sound to be a bit smoother.
I've been wanting to purchase a new DAP for the past 3 years. My 6th gen ipod nano is barely limping by at this point.
My question. Is this particular device worth $200? Obviously anything is going to seem light years ahead of the nano(my motorola moto G plus nearly blew my damn pants off the first time I had to resort to playing music on there-still, i want a dedicated player).
Also, how easy would something like this be for someone who's stupid and lazy. When it comes to tech, my brain don't work too good. If i'm going to invest anything over $150 on something, then I'd like to at least be able to load all of my old music and anything thereafter without causing myself too much grief or aggravation.
So, is this worth the price of admission? Hold off for "X", instead? If so, what is "X"? Thanks dudes and dudettes of the audio community.

Fiio makes daps too. They aren't just stacking.
The chip in this, jr, isn't all that high end and it's not really mid end. There is a real bug with UI on the JR that they didn't care to fix until the next model up.
With A&K you are paying for the name and their modern blade design. Most other companies you pay for the hardware.
You must be visiting the wrong forums... Where I've been most of the praise seems to be going to pricey Sony DAPs and a couple Fiios (X5 in particular, tho I'm curious about their new Q5 DAC/amp, reminds me of the much praised Leckerton I wanted a couple years ago).
Did they solve the UI lagging issue for this AR Jr?

Since 1.3 update
what the fuck. why is there even a collab with SJ in the first place?!
