Any idea what grade of eta movement they use? I've searched the 'net and haven't found an answer.

Can you please elaborate more on why this watch is great value for its cost? I am seriously considering purchasing it, but it is at the upper limit of my budget. So I'd like to be as informed as possible before making a decision.
Also, would you take this over the Oris Big Crown currently listed on Massdrop for the same price?

bcole Ball RR1103 is based either on ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200. They use Ball branded rotor, but AFAIK no other enhancements was made to the movements.
I'm waiting for Fireman Racer Classic that I think has a more classic design (for my taste).

ZoukmanIn short Ball although revived still has a fair amount of pedigree in their name.
The Ball caliber RR1103 is based on the ETA 2824-2 movement which is tremendously reliable and accurate. It's not uncommon to find the ETA 2824-2 movement in Tudors, Breitlings, Tag Heuers and many other brands costing much more.

FullObeansBut at the end of the day the RR1103 is not an ETA 2824-2. The Sellita SW 220-1 found in the Oris Big Crown Pointer is also an ETA 2824 Clone. What makes this Ball watch/it's mechanism superior to the Oris Big Crown currently listed on this site?

My biggest concern with both watches was their mechanisms, which you have addressed. Thank you for the insight, I apprecaite it.
This would be my first automatic. I'm guessing it doesn't get much better than this at $700 USD? Do you have any other recommendations on JomaShop that are comparable to this watch?

Great post! I'm relatively new to watch collecting so I just love reading posts like this. I'm sure I would have a difficult time choosing between Ball and Oris since both are offered at the same price.

ZoukmanWell a RR1103 is a ETA 2824-2, it's simply had different finishing applied. The Oris uses a Oris 745 which is based off a Sellita SW220 which in turn is a clone of the ETA 2836 .
Note that a clone is essentially a copy but in the case of the Sellita they normally use better hairsprings so are actually superior to the ETA movement in accuracy a lot of the time.
In terms of what makes it better. Not much, just buy the one you prefer. Ball has marginally more brand panache and the tritium illumination is usefull in pitch black situations but there's not a great deal of difference. Personally I'd save up a bit more money and buy a Sinn 556.

Sort of. Traditionally ETA has not had quality issues, whereas Selita has. They are better now, but th eQC has not equalled ETA yet. One should know within a week or two though. If your movement is bad, you send it back.
