Right of the bat, I'm going to say I don't love the look of this blade in person, but that's just personal preference, if you like the blade profile it's a very well built knife.
Out of the box the sharpness is their typical even grind and nice edge. Blade is perfectly centered and action is pretty darn good (but I don't judge that till after cleaning and re-oiling myself)
After disassembly:
search
Pros:
-D shaped pivot AND matching D Shaped cutout in opposite liner!!! (this combo shouldn't seem like a big deal, but WHY do so many of their later models lose this simple, but important, feature??) -nice steel for the liners, firm lock pressure -liners are skeletonized and chamfered in all the right places -tolerances are tight on all standoffs and pins and the backspacer Cons:
Nothing major, just nitpicking- -plastic bearing housings again. They work fine, i just think their metal cage bearings have a slight edge over these -bearings sit in a cutout in the blade on this model, instead of in the liners. Don't know if this is literally a con or not, but I like the idea of not taking away steal at the pivot of a blade After cleaning and reassembly: The action/detent on this knife is the epitome of perfection in my eyes; can't shake it open no matter what, so passes the gravity assist opening restrictions. But still deploys easily with the flipper and locks with a satisfying snap every time. Drops shut smoothly with a single little shake once you get it past the detent ball.
Was surprised by the weight of the backspacer. On a 5.0oz knife, the backspacer weighs in at 0.5oz...10% of the total weight 😯 I think they could've skeletonized that as well, or gone a hair thinner to make the handle slimmer.... But the weight and thickness both do make it feel pretty satisfying in the hand, but it's definitely a bit handle heavy
One final criticism, the jimping for the thumb on the spine does nothing, my thumb just glides over its smooth edges. All in all, if you like the esthetics, I definitely recommend it for the build quality

KavikI just received my Bestech Grampus today and I liked it a lot until I noticed a couple scratches/gouges on the spine. This has never happened with a Bestech I’ve purchased. I don’t like returning things but I may have to in this case. Would this bother you?

DougFLA123I've never received a Bestech with damage to it either I certainly would consider that to be something worthy of a return/exchange
But i hate dealing with returns, i'd probably grab some sandpaper and use that as an excuse to decide to round over (or at least chamfer) the whole spine. I might not be right in the head lol

DougFLA123Yes it would bother me. If I can see it in a normal picture (not zoomed in ultra tight) means I'm seeing it everytime I handle the knife and feeling just a little disappointment everytime I handle the knife. If it were me it would go back.

Gunnersmate2I agree. If you can see the damage from a good distance away, then it is disappointing every time you pick it up. It’s a shame because it flies open and drops shut, it’s very, very sharp, it has an even grind, perfect centering. I’m worried that if I exchange it for another Grampus, these other important things (to me) won’t be as nice. It sounds like I’m talking myself back into keeping it. : ) I did put in a damage ticket to Massdrop so I’ll see what they say. Also...My only (other) complaint with the knife is that the pocket clip is very pointy and digs into my middle finger when I flick it open.

DougFLA123Well with the quality action you described it might be worth keeping. If your adventurous you could try sanding it out depending on how deep the problem is. I think you did exactly what I would, file a ticket and start the waiting game. Then make a decision dependent upon what customer service says.

DougFLA123I am also disappointed in a recent knife purchase. I've been wanting a super blue tool steel bladed folding knife for a while and I just received a spyderco calypso sprint run with SB steel and grey/blue lightweight frn handle. The pivot or fulcrum is a rivet not a screw so the blade is forever off center. The rear lockbar doesn't sit anywhere close to flush with the blade when open. I've never seen a spyderco this bad. I emailed asking if I sent them the knife could they replace the handle with anything other than what it has. I'm not sure if spyderco does any custom work. I'm guessing no but....

Gunnersmate2That sucks man! Those Spyderco rivet pivots are really frustrating and make no sense to me at all! I’m going to create a General Conversation area to continue conversations like this one that are very interesting (to me anyway) but are unrelated to the original intended subject matter.

DougFLA123I was thinking the same. When you do will you try tagging me so I can see if it works? Thanks @DougFLA123

Gunnersmate2Ok @Gunnersmate2 . <— I don’t think that worked because it didn’t change from gray to an aqua/teal color. When you start typing @Dou...etc etc, does a pop up menu appear? Does it change color after you finish typing the whole name? I keep blaming this on my iPad. Anyway, I’ll probably create the conversation page tomorrow and I’ll let you know when I do.

DougFLA123The dropdown or popup window does appear when I start typing and if I select one it automatically sends the message and sometimes it turns teal and sometimes it doesn't. Same goes for when I type it all the way out. Not sure what's going on with that. Did you get a notice that I mentioned you in a post with my last message?

Gunnersmate2I did get that message, but you had also replied to my message so I think that’s why I got it. You would have to reply to Kavik or someone and do the @DougFLA123 . <—- Oh wait! It worked that time. My own name went teal when I @ myself. A menu popped up with my screen name in it and I selected it! Hmmm, we’ll see if it continues to work. I have a ton of questions about that knife! I can’t wait for my General Conversation page! 😃

Gunnersmate2I’ve got an old Spyderco “first one I ever purchased” it had a riveted blade, it works has just enough friction to keep it tight but it will open easy enough 👌 All my newer Spyderco’s are screws and are made very well 👍
