Okay this is my favorite of the high-end Bestechs. When I saw it I had to have it! I really love the way it looks, and ergonomics are good. I couldn't wait for the drop so I got it from BladeHQ for $196 or so.
Mine had issues, though due to the low serial (003/100) I kept it instead of returning it.
Issue #1 was the detent path was not finished/polished. I've never seen this before. The knife would barely open and had to be pressed closed and it felt rough very rough. I put lapping film between the ball and blade and polished it out, now it drops shut. Issue #2 was a very early and unreliable lock-up. I wasn't sure the best way to fix this other than jamming the lock hard and then unlocking it over and over again, but I did it get to the point where more than half of the lock bar gets under the lock face. There were a few more issues including dull blade, sharp burrs on the pocket clip, jimping cut at a slight angle, and a slightly crooked logo.
The knife is fine now but feels a little mushy compared to, say. a similar ZT. Probably because my repairs basically wore in the parts.
I've bought 3 of the high-end Bestechs and 2 had these kinds of fit and finish issues, which makes it hard to justify the $200 price. $150-$175 seems more appropriate. The low-end ones are great though.
I screwed up the first couple of knives that I took apart. I have to be happy about buying inexpensive knives to start with. It has been my experience that education rarely comes free. Start on a cheap knife and have some heat handy in case of Loctite. Also, a big, clean flat area is a tremendous asset.
My only all-Ti Bestech so far is The Dolphin and I was incredibly pleased by it’s form and finishing—few if any issues anywhere...! And there is no shortage of ‘style’ sssso...here I go again...! :)
You are a modest guy and I respect that. I didn’t mean to put a spotlight on you then...but I do appreciate reading helpful, practical, intelligent comments and perspectives. You’ll have to accept the gratitude: there is not enough of it getting to the right people. Cheers, then; here’s to your rapid recovery, man!
The Bestech BT1709 Starfighter will make all of your aches and pains go away! This is by far my favorite Bestech knife and one of my favorite knives overall, and I own a lot of knives!
Stay off the skateboard dude! You’re not as young and coordinated as you used to be! 🙂
WOW.. had to jump on this one, she looks beautiful:-)
Dang you MD, I just need to put you on retainer and send me my knives. OK... the is the last one for awhile, and a
Spyderco Shaman satin blade and looking for a new ZT if they'd ever come up with some new designs or Sprint runs.

Jump on in, the water is fine.
I just hope when this arrives my wife is not home. If she only knew:-) Hey, guess a knife festish is better than some other fetiches:-)
Is it just me, or does the colors and the name remind anyone of the movie "The Last Starfighter". I'm sure that even it that was some of the inspiration Bestech can't/won't admit to it, and who can blame them. I'm just wondering if anybody else sees the same, or if I'm just on a nostalgia journey? :)
Man, I've got so many folders with very similar specs, but I really like the look of this knife. Our 30th Anniversary is coming up next week. Wonder if my gorgeous wife will go for this new piece of masculine jewelry as her present to me? She's probably already bought the clothes she plans to drape me in for wherever she's made reservations to show me off in public with my newly-polished trophy husband image. Probably no chance of getting in on this drop, but I'd still like to see an actual review or two here for it. There's always the 31st Anniversary to look forward to.
Spent the groceries and half the rent....on knives recently. My cheap Bestechs are amazing. This should be even better. Maybe it will come around again when I have a bit a extra cash. Oh, well.
$200 at BladeHQ and KnifeCenter. Good deal here Drop, kudos. I’d jump on this one but I have too many knives with similar specs to justify this purchase. I have the mini Emperor, Shinkansen and the Engine. All stellar build quality, outstanding fit and finish. Bestech has to be one of the most underrated knife makers right now. They’re putting out super nice, damn near custom quality knives these days.
