Good shit. Works well and a few bucks cheaper than amazon for the black color
Rated as IPX8 1m/30min. WHAT A JOKE! As soon as I dunked it in a cup of water I watched the air bubble out as it filled up. Might be a nice headlamp otherwise, but they are LYING about the waterproof rating.
A few notes that I would otherwise put in a review, but haven't participated in this drop. I've been using Black Diamond headlamps ever since being incredibly disappointed in my Princeton Tech Vizz, which (I thought) had all the features I wanted, and then some ... but the battery life was terrible. Outdoor Gear Labs has some great reviews of headlamps, dated 2018-05: https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/camping-and-hiking/best-headlamp . I have a combination of Spots and Cosmos from the 2016, 2018, and 2019 model years. I've been mostly happy with all of them, as they generally have all the features I want, few or none I don't, are easy enough to use, and have reasonable battery life (better than the Vizz, not as long as I'd really like). All have: Spot/flood white LEDs, red LED, lockout feature, "IPX8" waterproof rating (but have to dry the battery compartment out before using after getting wet).
  • 2016 Spot - 200 lumen spot, good flood light, good placement of red LED, one-button operation, BUT useless and annoying "PowerTap" feature that turns max brightness on while just handling the light.
  • 2018 Spot - 300 lumen spot, better flood light, poor placement of red LED (shadowed one one side), one-button, still has abominable PowerTap.
  • 2018 Cosmo - 200 lumen spot, retains flood and red LED placement from 2016 Spot, one-button, and NO PowerTap!
  • 2019 Cosmo 225 - 225 lumen spot, retains good flood and red LED placement, nice two-button operation (one for brightness, one for mode, both for lockout), still no PowerTap :) BUT: single large polycarbonate window subject to scratches, poor lens on red LED leaves no center hot spot at all, making it disperse too much and become difficult to see beyond 2-3 feet (prior models of Cosmo have a mild hotspot in the center of the red LED that makes it more useful at distances of 5-10 feet—from my head to the ground, for example).
As for why I might prefer the Cosmo to the Spot (beyond the useless PowerTap), I prefer longer battery life to super-bright light, as I'm most often using a headlamp when it's, well, dark, and my eyes get used to dimmer light. All in all, if I could magically make a headlamp, it would pretty much be the 2018 Cosmo, but with the 2-button operation of the 2019 Cosmo 225 and the battery life of the Petzl Tikka (and maybe the actual waterproof operation of my old Princeton Tec Quad). In the absence of magical powers, I'll settle for the 2018 Cosmo.
$18.99 at "Mountain Steals."
What's the advantage of a this kind of lamp to one like skilhunt H03 for example which has a much stronger light?
hushsh
Black Diamond is a well-known and reliable brand. People actually summit peaks with their gear. It's backed by a great company. Skilhunt? Unknown name based in China – I'm half Chinese and am always skeptical of throwing my money down on a non-western HQ'ed product. The Cosmo is lighter. The H03 is advertised as being lighter *without* headphones or headband. Apples-to-apples the Cosmo wins. The H03 headband also has an unnecessary strap over the head. Cosmo – ubiquitous AAA batteries, can be found in every store. H03 – less common CR123 or 18650. Cosmo – 200 lumen is practical for near-to-middle distances. H03 – 1000 lumen max is good for far distance and evidently they don't care about listing its adjustable output at "real use" distance. That tells me they're a marketing firm that thinks max output is the primary selling point. A 1000 lumen light is good for, say, caving but in that case I'd have a 200-300 lumen headlamp *plus* a dedicated high-output lamp. Cosmo – red night vision mode preserves your night vision. H03 – no red. I use red *every* time I'm backpacking. Cosmo – $22.23 to your door in 3 days on Amazon. H03 – $41 *minimum* to your door from China in who knows how long. I've had three Black Diamond headlamps (lost my best one to my ex) and considered getting this one. I'm dumb like that. What I have works great.
(Edited)
the Spot is already sold out with 3 days left to go? Lame!
This is the 2017 version of the Spot with 300 lumens, not 200, correct?
I bought this same one three months ago on Massdrop... paid 38.00 :(
$18 on Amazon with 2 day shipping are u kidding me massdrop?
prajibv
Only one color option comes at that price on Amazon. I bought one Spot and one Cosmo thru this drop - the same colors on Amazon would've cost me $6 more (including shipping), not to mention the cost of a Prime membership. Besides, not everyone needs the headlamp immediately..
Why, oh why, do I get an email at 1:58 pm today (5 hours ago) and the email says that the drop ends in 3 days... I come to get a couple of these, and the drop is over....
MikeWatsonPhotography
Same :(
MikeWatsonPhotography
It's back up!
25 days before expected ship date of Nov 14th! one of the only downsides to this purchase.
why did I just get an email about this closed drop?!
t0n3
Annoying... And not the first time. Amazon is so much more reliable
Are you kidding me? There is NOTHING remarkable about the price. In fact, if you want a specific color you in the end pay full retail.
GTFO, you're drunk.
Are these models comfort for running?
is the strap washable? I wouldn't want the white band if not
My husband liked my Spot so much that I had to grab him one on Amazon - about the same price. Great light for camping or in his case, work.
There is no chance the Spot is waterproof. There is no gasket liner anymore or a pressure lock arm. That is gone it seems which was something I liked about the previous models. It is just a snap on back for the battery pack now... What happened Black Diamond?! IPX8 my butt!

I have a couple petzls, there is a nice jump to the storm. It is reaaaaaally bright when you have the multiple beams going. I highly recommend the Storm. Aside from the Lumintop Prince, it is my favorite flashlight.

Thanks!
For anybody that missed this drop, CampSaver.com currentky has these listed for $29.99 for the Spot headlamp.

The model in the link that you provided is the older 200 lumen version, not the newer 300 lumen 2017 version.
I am sorry I hit the wrong button Can you please send black spot not the cosmo. Thank you.

Hi @Rubcan - If you're having trouble with your order, I recommend reaching out to our Community Support through your transactions page (https://www.massdrop.com/transactions).
so it is cancelled if i understand or not ?
Has anyone critically compared these to headlights made by non outdoor-rec focused companies ? Energizer has a variety of headlamps, for example, that are just as bright and seem to have just as many features for significantly less than BD's street price. My energizer headlamp has been doing the job for me just fine, but I'm wondering if I'm really missing out on something. Are these significantly lighter for the lumens or something ?
EverythingIsBetterOutdoors
Late response but for posterity, this is the best headlamp I've ever owned (not like I've owned that many). The difference is in build quality, reliability and therefore trustworthiness. The button feels as good as my BRZ's trunk button, a rubber clicky waterproof button. The housing feels solid, the projectors are focused well and the tilting mechanism feels precise. I'm sure there are bentleys of headlights out there but for the price I trust these black diamond for both outdoors as well as for working on vehicles and house stuff.
Mario.Paul
@Mario.Paul well I "bit the bullet" and bought a Storm a few weeks ago and yup, you're right. Even though the cheapy led headlamps are great and a huge step up from old incandescent flashlights, the BD headlamps just blow me away. The Storm is ridiculously bright - even on a non-white color at it's lowest setting I have been able to easily hike at night whereas in the past with my cheappy night hiking was a bit trecherous. They're also very versatile in their programming - the one I got lets me dim it to a specific level but instantly bring it up to full brightness or instantly back to dim with the flick of my finger (literally), and has multiple colored lights built in, AND I easily get several nights run time on a single set of batteries. Easily worth the money hands down, glad I finally did it and got myself "one of them fancy new fangled" headlamps.
Can I use the button to adjust the light power for Spot? I understand there is a touch function by the side but I wondered if I can use the usual top button to push and hold and adjust the brightness.
Anyone knows?
Thank you.
feltay
Technically, the variable light is with the rubberized top button. I've never used a touch function on the side.
nthdegreeburns
Thank you. I owned a cosmo and I loved it. But I prefer the button over the side touch instead. Thus I would like to know if it works for the top button before I commit into this purchase. (:
I know the drop says these are the 2017 models but the specs I read are for the 2016 closeout models. I would like a clarification before I place an order. Thanks
bvogel64
Sorry for the confusion. The copy and specs have been updated to reflect the proper info for the 2017 models.
I believe I read that the 2017 Spot is 300 lumens? Can we clarify if this is 200 or 300?
typeronin
You are correct, the 2017 Spot is for 300 lumens. Our new copy didn't transfer over correctly, all of the information on the drop page is correct now. Sorry for any confusion.
PaigeD
Awesome. That's a great price, then.
Also: Spot (Black) shows 2016 model while the rest are 2017.
Hi All - BD has been great to work with, these headlamps are awesome, and the reason that this drop wasn't fulfilled was completely my fault. I apologize. I let down 200 members and I feel horrible about it. I'm working with BD to see if we can get some cool new drops going, maybe even for their new headlamps. But in the meantime, you can vent your disappointment at me. @LostVipor @joel.cheung @mrshevik

It's all good! i decided to swoop the '17 spot @ Amazon. I'll be back!

The spot is a very well known headlamp, but for what it's worth I've owned a couple of this model (200 lumen) and figured I'd chime in and say it's held up great for anyone considering this drop. Rain, cold, dirt, never failed me. Hundreds and hundreds of hours. It's light, and has all the features I want and none that I don't. Thinking about snagging another for my wife to put in her car just in case.
Side note...I'm new to massdrop, but I am a little shocked at the jerks who feel the need to make negative comments. There are drops literally every day, 90% of which don't apply to me, but I don't feel the need to take time out of my day to crap on it. Unless I have relevant input that may help other people make their decision.
gbrim21
If there is a comment section. There will be grumpy internet trolls. Nothing new to the internet world.
I owned a black diamond head lamp a few years ago, and it fell apart pretty quick. Don't get me wrong BD is a good brand but their headlamps are only meh. It lasted me maybe a year or two of good use.

You guessed it, cracks on the tilt plate, and I do believe it was a first gen model.  Another problem I experienced, was the light kept going out, but I did get it replaced, eventfully, and it seems to work fine now.  Also it has been a few years, and with the headlamp still working, I have no choice but  to agree, these guys don't skip out on quality.
wanderingwill
Sometimes their decisions on design have made me scratch my head a little but it keeps getting better. Even though it was still my light of choice, I wasn't too crazy about the first three spot versions...#4 is pretty great and I'll be curious to check out #5 this year when it's available. They still have those old tilt plates available...I think $4 each online or if you call they usually will send one for free.

I'm right there with you man. If you're out in the woods with me at night you're using red light or nothing at all.
I remember once we were on a NPS ranger led stargazing tour and all the clueless impervious people walking up late with white light flaring everyone's night vision ... people started getting rude about it (and they were right to)
I realise you posted a year ago, but I wear a headlamp when walking the dog after dark. If ya think that the dog is considerate and only poops in fully covered by street light areas nope. I want a hand for leash and the other hand is in the poop bag to clean it up. Leaves no other hand to hold flashlight. I turn it on to see where he's doing it, pick it up, turn it off. No dickhead move involved.
I've owned a Spot since the fall of last year and have dearly loved it. I get solid battery life, a ton of output flexibility and the one touch "full blast" feature is significantly more handy than I initially would have thought.
