I can't really be reading this right, can i?
50%: Spyderco Native 5 with black FRN Handle + S35VN blade ($144.95 retail value) 15%: Spyderco Native 5 with black G-10 Handle + S35VN blade ($224.95 retail value)
Spyderco charges $100 more for the same knife, and steel, but G10 instead of FRN??!!?? That's insane.
KavikThose are MSRP not actual retail, more like $50 in the real world. It's not just the scales are different though. The g10 versions have full steel liners and the frn are linerless. It's a much beefier knife (also much heavier).

KavikI don't really know what the FRN Native 5 is like, but I have one with G-10 scales and it is amazing.

NotsurewhyibotherI knew it would be crazy jacked up msrp, not real world pricing, but the additional info helps, thanks.
It's exactly that overpriced msrp and map nonsense that is the reason I don't keep up on spyderco products.....it's getting real hard to find the value in a lot of them, even if they are of decent quality
KavikSome of their stuff is getting ridiculous in price. You can still find value in their lineup, but it takes some looking. If you want a golden made g10 Spyderco, the best value in my opinion is the manix g10. Only about $20 more than the frn and also cones with s30v (base manix is bd1)

NotsurewhyibotherI picked up the g10 yojimbo 2 on here a while back, it's a solid knife, but with frn/g10 and s30v costing as much, or more, than some of the ti/s35vn offerings around here.... Honestly not sure that i need more than that one

KavikYep, that sounds about right. Id have to check the #'s on somebody's website, but a while back I went to BladeHQ intending to buy...hell, I cant remember now. It actually might have been the Native 5. I wanted the S110V steel with the FRN handles--it was the best deal. When I got there the employee at the desk said they didnt have thay particular model on-hand, and theyd have to order it from the warehouse in VA, which was odd because I could have sworn their website said it was in stock.
But I was in a hurry so and they had other customers, so I told them to order it and have it sent to the store for pick-up, use the credit card on my account, etc. I left before they processed the transaction, and to make a long story short, when I looked at the charges the next day they were around $75 more than I thought they should have been ($75 vs $100 = the difference between the listed MSRP and what everyone actually charges). The trouble, of course was that they had ordered me the G10 version instead of the FRN.
I couldnt believe it, but it does prove one thing: those of us who think FRN is a fancy name for cheap plastic are right.

HatuletohYeah, i'm with you on thinking frn is a cheaper material... But, damn, I can get a whole knife from Bestech with G10 handles for under $50 lol
(i know, I know, China vs US, blah blah.... But the point still stands from a consumers standpoint, and the G10 in some of my bestechs are nicer by far then the g10 in my spyderco)
KavikUnderstandable. I'm willing to pay a certain premium for domestic manufacturing, but that only goes so far. It's hard to justify the increased price on many of the upgrades.

Daisy_CutterI was in the same boat for several years with my black G10 Native 5, until I started to want my first FRN Spydie, and landed this beauty on the second-hand market in near mint condition for just $75. Absolutely no regrets!
