The term “hand-welting” is quickly fading from the shoemaker’s lexicon. But there’s no replacing the human touch. Because hand-welted shoes require a leather holdfast to secure the inseam, rather than the canvas that’s used in machine-made shoes, they offer superior comfort. And unlike machining, hand-welting allows the outsoles to be replaced without compromising the structural integrity of the shoes. Budapest is one of the world’s great bastions of hand-welting, and it’s here that Buday Shoes—a family-run business of about six artisans—has been operating since the ‘80s.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of leather and size.
Panta Clothing is America’s only importer of Buday Shoes, and Massdrop has partnered with the New York-based clothier to offer the company’s quarter-brogue Oxfords. So named for their perforated captoe design, these made-to-order dress shoes are hand-lasted on the Frakno last, a classic almond-toe, English-style shape. The shoes are hand-welted from your choice of boxcalf from Perlinger tannery in Germany or shell cordovan from Horween, and the interior features a soft perforated leather insole with arch support. The channeled outsole features 18 brass nails and is finished with a flush brass toe plate.
This drop includes the addition of alder-wood shoe trees. Custom-lasted to fit Buday’s oxfords, these trees will keep your shoes in shape for as long as you own them. Also included is a cloth dust bag for each shoe.
The shoes will be made on the Frakno last, a classic almond-toe English style that offers a medium (D) width. The shoes will be sized in UK and we recommend sizing down one for US customers (so if you're a US9, go for a UK8).
All orders will be shipped by Massdrop.
Estimated ship date is May 16, 2017 PT.
After the drop ends, payment will be collected. To deliver the best value to the group the request will then be submitted to the vendor up front, making all sales final. Be sure to check the discussion page for updates.
