All audio equipment needs opamps—from DACs to preamps, from studio mixing consoles to PC sound cards to car amps. They’re as important to audio gear as the lens is to a movie projector Read More
Some actual specs to justify the price premium would be good.
For example, many single/dual/quad series opamps can exhibit flat response which easily exceeds 20hz to 20khz. That is really no challenge. Instead, quality op amps distinguish themselves by their noise performance (better examples having much lower noise). The next specification we often look to would be slew rate or rsie time. How quickly can the op amp throw a square wave signal with the least amount of deformation.
Some op amps have great noise figures, but are weak on slew rate.
There are also mitigating factors. Opamps are not tubes. In most audio gear you have many opamps. Input amp, interstage buffers, output amp, balancing/unbalancing amp.
Either way I'll stick to Burr Brown/TI opamps for my critical applications. Plain old TL074 for not so critical.
haha. "relentlessly obnoxious prick" still doesn't make me wrong. Being wrong sucks, huh? It would seem my highest rated comments are some very choice personal insults and the inevitable banter and hi-jinks that ensue. Go figure. Though it's true, I do spend an inordinate amount of my comment time calling out hypocritical, bloviating douchebags... Maybe you should ask yourself why you are such a douche. Seriously.
Out of curiosity, when you review a headphone, do you rely on a FR graph to inform you that it actually sounds different than the previous headphone you were listening to? Since...you know..."Any changes you talk yourself into in the time it takes to swap out an opamp (or by extension, a headphone) are not reliable objectively, and are often more the result of the lump of fat between your ears." hahaha
Motorrad--->'when you review a headphone, do you rely on a FR graph to inform you that it actually sounds different than the previous headphone you were listening to?'<---
exactly.
but then: 'in the time it takes to swap out an opamp', maybe it takes some folks a loooong time to swap an opamp.
new_blade_fansince when is objective measurement why i would listen to music ?
but i know what i like, and it's why i choose to taste chocolate over brussel sprouts, even though the latter is technically healthier
I installed the Burson v5i op. on my Little Bear B4 portable tube amp and it kicks butt. Stronger sound, more dynamics. A very simple replacement you can do yourself. At this Price I'd jump on it right away.
I think that’s the same burson that I got for my little dot 1+.
Im about the pull the trigger on a b4.
Any idea if if you can use/bring the little bear on an airplane?
DavestefHmmmm, interesting. I can't say I have tried. I do know the tubes interfere with smart phones due to radio frequency. You have to separate the two....no stacking with cell phones.
LuckyLuke575The most possible way you can break it is through removing opamp from socket improperly and bend the legs...
if you are not using 3m style sockets with tabs, but ones that has round holes, opamp can be VERY difficult to unplug without any deform. Nowadays i double socketed almost all my opamps.
So... Just my $0.02 for those who are interested, but I bought the dual single direct from Burson as an upgrade for my Little Dot 1+, and I can say without a doubt that it was some of the best money I have ever spend on mods for a unit. With the right tubes on the input stage, it basically doubled the sound quality. It is just a bit warm with great bass, but without the highs being sacrificed. I can't speak to using it in any other units, but I am very happy with the application I am using it in.
Now, dealing with Burson and their terrible communication while shipping took weeks to even happen is a totally different story. Not even mentioning that the price I paid was nearly double this drop. I may buy one or two of these to try on other units in the future. YMMV..
KbaumBest match I have found so far are late 50's Sylvania JHS-5654/6AK5W. Maybe not the bassiest, but all around fantastic 6J1 replacements for fairly cheap compared to what I've had to spend on 6DJ8 or 6SN7 NOS upgrades over the years.
Blze001It seems so. The company appears to be International Bridge (At least on mine) which is notorious for extremely slow shipping in the Drop community. If you use your tracking code at https://www.myib.com/trackpackage it should tell you its actual status.
Burson V5i Not as advertised.
Be sure to double check your supply voltages before ordering the Burson V5i.
The Burson V5i-Dual is NOT a direct replacement for all the parts as claimed on the massdrop site.
search
For example:
The OPA 2134 data sheet shows it is rated from +/- 2.5 to +/- 18Vdc
The Burson data sheet is hard to find but shows the V5i-D is rated from +/- 5 to +/- 16 Vdc.
This may be problematic on either side of the voltage range so you should double check before ordering.
My circuit runs at +/- 16.8 Vdc so I cant use them.
It is unfortunate that Massdrop did not check this before making these claims.
The Burson has lots of favorable reviews and I was looking forward to hearing them.
I will be returning them to Massdrop for a refund.
Update: Massdrop has refused to issue a refund even though they falsely advertised the capabilities of the product.
Massdrop support said I need to contact Burson, Burson says it is a massdrop issue because it was a special price purchase so they do not cover it (even though Burson advertises a 30 day return policy). I am hoping one or the other organizations will realize this is the opposite of customer service and simply refund my money. Until they do I think everyone should realize if you but something from Massdrop (perhaps everything they advertise) you are buying something with no warranty whatsoever and if it does not work their attitude is tough luck.
jberdContact your country/state's consumer protection agency. Misleading advertising is exactly the kind of thing they are supposed to deal with. It is high time consumers started standing up for themselves instead of behaving like slaves. Know your rights and exercise them.
If your country does not have a consumer protection agency then that is a sad thing indeed.
jberdgood points re the refund policy
the only current solution is to double check the product spec sheet prior to purchase, as advertising should never be taken as accurate
the other option is purchase via paypal, and then let them sort out the issue.. not a fast process, but in my experience a very satisfactory one
For anyone looking at the pictures and thinking about using the V5i-D in their Xduoo XD-05. You need to know that the upgrade will give a wider/deeper sound stage compared to the default opamp.
BUT, the XD-05 will turn it self of if you use it with the V5i-D on high gain. Low and medium works great, but high gain not at all. More info in the Head-fi thread about the XD-05. We are many that experience the same problem.
springbayI just purchase do one and put it in my xd-05. I can confirm this is an issue. Unfortunate but it still sounds amazing on medium gain. And is the the right amount of loud for me tbh. Sometimes I wish I could just blow my eardrums out but cannot.
Good upgrade from the TI Burr Brown OPA2134? This is the amp my motherboard is using (it is upgradeable with an IC extractor). Would this V5i amp work with my motherboard? And lastly, should I be buying a single V5i Dual, a matched pair of the duals, or a matched pair of the singles to upgrade my motherboard audio?
My experience with Burson Audio customer service is horrible. I will never buy a Burson Audio product again and as a result of this I can not recommend Burson Audio products.
